SFU Falls to CCSU; Rematch on Sunday as #4 Flash Host #5 Blue Devils in NEC Quarterfinal

BOX SCORE NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (March 4, 2013) - Four players posted double-figures for the Saint Francis U women's basketball team, but it was not enough, as they fell to Central Connecticut State, 76-71, in the final regular season contest.

Alli Williams (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) led the Red Flash (15-14, 10-8) with 17 points and 10 rebounds for her 21st double-double effort of the season. Jaclyn Babe scored 20 first half points and finished with 29 for the Blue Devils (16-13, 10-8), who will come to Sweet Loretto on Sunday for a Northeast Conference Quarterfinal match-up.

SFU trailed early in the first half, CCSU led by as many as nine with 10:12 to go in the frame. The Flash went on a 6-0 run to narrow the margin to one after a reverse lay-up from Shene Fleming (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne). After a three from Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk), the score was tied up at 23 apiece.
The Blue Devils went on a late 8-0 run and went into the break with a six point lead.

Coming out of halftime, the Flash scored seven unanswered points to take a 35-34 lead. CCSU went on another 8-0 run to regain the lead. Nickia Gibbs (Greenbelt, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) made back-to-back jumpers to narrow the margin to six, forcing a Blue Devils timeout at the 10:51 mark.

CCSU continued to hold a lead despite the Flash threatening several times. Hayward knocked down a triple with just four seconds to play to get SFU within two, but the time ran out before Saint Francis could get any closer.

Nickia Gibbs (Greenbelt, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) finished with 16 points on a 5-10 shooting night. Rebecca Sparks (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) added 11, including five from the charity stripe. Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) posted 10 points to round out the players in double-figures.

#4 Saint Francis will host #5 Central Connecticut on Sunday, March 10 at DeGol Arena. The time is TBD.
