PITTSBURGH (Aug. 23, 2013) – Forward A.J. Baroffio scored 2:12 into overtime as Duquesne outlasted the Saint Francis U women's soccer team, 1-0, Friday in the season opener for both squads.
The late marker – a header resulting from an Amy Vinopal cross – was the lone blemish in Red Flash goalkeeper Jessica Andrew (Doncaster, South Yorkshire UK/Balby Carr)'s first collegiate appearance in net. The junior made 10 saves in the first two periods of play.
The Dukes seized momentum in the first half, outshooting SFU 12-to-5 and racking up eight corner kicks to the Flash's two. The game evened out in the second half, with both team taking eight shots. Shots on goal ended up relatively square with Duquesne holding an 11-to-8 advantage.
Saint Francis' MAC Hermann Trophy candidate Tesa McKibben (Cogan Station, Pa./Montoursville) took a match-high six shots, five of which required the intervention of Dukes keeper Devon Tabata.
The Red Flash welcomes Morehead State on Sunday for a 2 p.m. contest. The match will stream live on NECFrontRow.com as a part of SFU's Game of the Week package.
