Quick VCU goals derail dominant Red Flash effort

BOX SCORE WASHINGTON, D.C. (Aug. 30, 2013) – In the opening match of the 2013 DC Invitational Saint Francis U was able to will its style on Virginia Commonwealth but couldn't post a result, falling to the Rams 2-1.

VCU's Taryn Cressy drew first blood in the match by converting on a penalty kick in the 56th minute.  Jessie Krasko gave the Rams – who were picked to finish third in the Atlantic 10 – a 2-0 lead just over a minute later.

Senior Barbara Maros de Carvalho (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Sagrado Coraco de Jesus) got the Flash on the scoreboard in the 69th minute.  Tesa McKibben (Cogan Station, Pa./Montoursville) and Eloá Nascimento assisted on the goal.

As a team, the Red Flash out-shot VCU 11 to 1 in a scoreless first half and maintained a 21 to 11 advantage on the afternoon.  SFU also doubled up the Rams in shots on goal (8-4), held a 3 to 2 advantage in corner kicks and was stymied by three offsides calls.

Saint Francis plays George Washington on Sunday.
