Red Flash picks up first NEC win at CCSU

BOX SCORE NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (Jan. 11, 2014) – After being done-in by a slow start and turnovers in its Northeast Conference opener on Thursday, Saint Francis put in a complete-game effort and committed no second-half turnovers to down Central Connecticut, 75-67, on Saturday.

Junior Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) scored 18 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked three shots to lead the Red Flash and record his eighth double-double of the season.  Dominique Major (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park), SFU's top scorer on the afternoon, hit five 3-pointers on his way to a career-high 19 points.

Malik Harmon (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) and Ollie Jackson (Dallas, Texas/Pinkston ) chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively, to round out the Frankies' season-high four double-digit scorers.

"Dom hit some great shots for us and Earl gave his usual effort – he was a monster," said SFU coach Rob Krimmel.  "It was a total team effort.  We missed a couple more free throws than I would have hoped for but we made the ones we needed to make."

The Red Flash (3-12; 1-1) took an 18-15 lead on a Major 3-pointer at the 8:50 mark and extended its lead to 35-28 at the intermission.  As for turnovers, after a season-high 17 Thursday, SFU committed nine in the first half against the Blue Devils before cleaning things up in the second half.

"The result wasn't what we wanted on Thursday, but we've now out-rebounded our first two NEC opponents," Krimmel said of his squad's 40-to-35 margin on the boards Saturday.

"That's an effort stat and we talked to our guys about controlling that.  There are going to be games where we might not have some shots, but controlling those 'effort stats' are going to give us a chance to win."

Faronte Drakeford led the Blue Devils with 22 points.

The win was the fourth for the Red Flash in 16 meetings between the two programs in New Britain.  SFU improved to 2-1 against the Blue Devils under head coach Rob Krimmel.

Saint Francis is back in action on Thursday when it visits Robert Morris for a 7 p.m. contest.
