BOX SCORE POSTGAME INTERVIEW
LORETTO, Pa. (Jan. 11, 2014) – The Saint Francis University women's basketball took down Fairleigh Dickinson, 111-89, in record-setting fashion on Saturday afternoon for its second straight Northeast Conference victory.
The 111 Red Flash (4-10, 2-1) team points broke an NEC record that was set ironically by the Knights (1-13, 0-3) against Saint Francis on Jan. 8, 1987. The mark also broke SFU's scoring record of 109 points set in 1992.
Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) led the way for SFU with 25 points, the junior knocked down seven shots from three-point land to tie her own personal record. Hayward also posted a game-high five steals in the win.
Alli Williams (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) recorded 22 points and nine rebounds.
"I am happy about the win and the great pace that we played for the entire game today," SFU head coach
Joe Haigh said. "We played with great intensity, we played hard, and we made shots."
Saint Francis led right out of the gates and never looked back, the Flash took an 18-0 lead to start the contest in under five minutes of play. SFU's lead extended to as much as 26 points after two free throws from
Corissa Archer (Clermont, Fla./East Ridge) with 5:33 to play in the first half.
Fairleigh Dickinson did not hold a lead at any point in the game, but they were able to cut down the deficit to 12 before the halftime break. SFU on the other hand, scored a season-high 56 points in the first period and took a 56-44 halftime lead.
SFU's lead hovered around 20 for the majority of the second half and again it extended to 26 towards the end after two free throws from
Shaqeia Stokes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods). A jumper from
Erin Blaine (Washington, D.C./H.D. Woodson) with 1:20 to go put Saint Francis at 110 points, tying the NEC record. Finally, a free throw from
Bridget Murphy (Bethlehem, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) set the new scoring record with six seconds to play.
The Red Flash again saw five players score in double-figures for the second straight game. Murphy added 15 points and six assists off the bench.
Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) and
Shaqeia Stokes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) each put up 13 points, it was a career-high for Stokes.
Rebecca Keegan (Jessup, Pa./Valley View) and
Corissa Archer (Clermont, Fla./East Ridge) each posted three blocks. The Red Flash shot a season-high from the free throw line at 84.2% (32-38).
"We got everyone out there and it was a total team effort in the win today," Haigh continued.
Saint Francis returns to action on Monday evening as Bryant comes to Loretto for a 7 p.m. match-up. SFU and Bryant split the regular season match-ups in 2012-13. The Frankies won the last meeting at home on Jan. 5, 2013, 81-76.
