Buzzer-Beater Lifts Bryant over Saint Francis

BOX SCORE POSTGAME INTERVIEWS

LORETTO, Pa. (Jan. 13, 2014)
– A buzzer-beating lay-up by Jenniqua Bailey was the difference in a back-and-forth game between the Saint Francis University women's basketball team and Bryant on Monday night. SFU fell, 88-86, in a heartbreaker to give the visitor its first win in program history inside DeGol Arena.

The Red Flash (4-11, 2-2) and Bulldogs (8-7, 3-1) went blow-for-blow throughout the entire game as there were 10 lead changes and a tied score 17 different times.

"Losing a game like that leaves a sick feeling for not just me, but all the players who worked so hard for 40 minutes," SFU head coach Joe Haigh said.

Alli Williams (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) led the way for the Frankies as she posted 27 points, seven rebounds, seven steals, four assists and two blocks in 34 minutes of play, while only committing one turnover. Corissa Archer (Clermont, Fla./East Ridge) also posted a 13-point, seven-rebound effort off the bench to spark the Flash.

Courtney Schissler led Bryant with 36 points off a 12-for-18 shooting night, including 8-of-11 from beyond the three-point arc.

"It was disappointing, but you have to credit Bryant. They shot over 50% from the field and we have to learn from this loss and get better," Haigh continued.

Saint Francis trailed by as much as nine early in the first half, before it went on an 18-7 run midway through the period to take a lead after an Erin Blaine (Washington, D.C./H.D. Woodson) lay-in with 7:10 to play.

With the game tied at 34 apiece, SFU got a lay-up from Archer with 30 seconds to go and the Flash took a two-point lead into the halftime break.

The Red Flash held a few leads for the early portion of the second period; including its largest of the game at the 10:38 mark with the score, 61-56.

Both squads continued to exchange baskets and Saint Francis held an 86-84 lead with 1:21 to go and had possession. A turnover, missed shot, and a foul led to Jenniqua Bailey knocking down two free throws to tie the game at 86 with 15 seconds to go.

SFU missed a three-pointer and after a timeout Bryant ran the length of the court for a last second lay-up to steal the game in Loretto.

The Flash received double-figure efforts from five players for the third consecutive game. Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk), Erin Blaine (Washington, D.C./H.D. Woodson), and Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) each scored 11 points.

Bryant shot 52% (31-59) from the field from the game, including a 52% (12-23) mark from three-point land. Saint Francis significantly led in bench points, 44-1.

Saint Francis will hit the road for a one-game trip to Robert Morris on Saturday, tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
