BOX SCORE BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Jan. 27, 2014) – The Saint Francis University women's basketball team won its third consecutive game as it bested LIU Brooklyn, 84-76, away from home on Monday evening.
Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) put up a career-high 24 points and knocked down five shots from three-point land to lead all scorers in the contest.
Alli Williams (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) notched 22 points and 14 rebounds, while also joining the 1,000 career rebound club at Saint Francis. Williams becomes just the third player in Red Flash (7-12, 5-3) history to get over the millennium mark.
"We are playing better and better every game, and the best thing is we are getting contributions from different players every night," said SFU head coach
Joe Haigh.
The Red Flash and Blackbirds (4-15, 2-6) played a fairly even first half, Saint Francis took an early 6-2 lead after Williams converted on an old-fashioned three-point play.
LIU went on a 12-3 run midway through the period to take six-point lead with 12:49 to play. SFU took a narrow 37-36 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Blackbirds went on a quick 4-0 run out of the break to regain the lead, before Saint Francis went on a 17-7 run over a five-minute span to take control of the game.
Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) led the charge during the run, knocking down two shots from beyond the arc.
LIU Brooklyn stayed within striking distance for the remainder of the half and actually narrowed the gap to just four points with 1:32 to play. It was Brock again who knocked down a clutch triple with just over a minute to play and gave SFU the 78-71 lead.
SFU connected on six straight free throws in the final minute to ice the game.
Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) notched 11 points and three steals and
Bridget Murphy (Bethlehem, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) added 10 points off the bench.
Saint Francis shot 40% (10-25) from beyond the arc, while LIU Brooklyn shot just 23% (4-17).
"We are starting to execute better, we have learned something from our errors earlier in the season and we are learning how to close out games," Haigh continued.
Saint Francis will make its longest road trip of the conference slate as it travels first to Wagner on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match-up. SFU earned a victory in the lone meeting between the two schools last year inside DeGol Arena by a score of 80-43.
