Hayward Drops 40 as SFU Tops Cal in Exhibition Action

BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Nov. 1, 2014) – Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) put up 40 points in a 88-75 victory over California (Pa.) in Saint Francis University's first of two home exhibition games inside DeGol Arena on homecoming weekend.

The Red Flash took control in the second half and never looked back against the Vulcans. SFU also got significant contributions from Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) (eight points, nine rebounds), Shaqeia Stokes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) (eight points, nine rebounds), Kamari Talley (Camden, N.J./Woodrow Wilson) (eight points, five rebounds), and Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) (eight points, four rebounds).

Both teams played a fairly even first half with Saint Francis holding the largest lead of the half at seven points with 5:22 to play. The Vulcans went on a late 17-4 run over those final five minutes to take a 40-34 lead into halftime.

Each squad started fairly slow in the opening frame as it took SFU nearly three minutes to record its first field goal. Hayward finished with 16 points in the period after knocking down four triples, but also picked up three fouls only allowing her to play 12 minutes.

SFU scored the first four points to start the second half and tied the game up at 40. The Flash then went on a 12-0 run and led 52-41 with 13:29 to play. Saint Francis extended its lead to as much as 15 and never let the Vulcans get within more than nine for the remainder of the half.

Saint Francis won the rebounding battle, 58-48, and each team turned the ball over 28 times. Taylor Allison (State College, Pa./State College) also scored six points off the bench for SFU.

Saint Francis hosts the University of Pittsburgh – Johnstown for its second home exhibition game on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m.
