Four Reach Double-Figures as SFU Bests UPJ

BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Nov. 10, 2014) – Four players reached double-figures for the Saint Francis University women's basketball team as it dropped the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, 111-84, in exhibition action inside DeGol Arena on Monday evening.

Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) led the Red Flash offense again in its final exhibition game of the season with 28 points to go along with six assists. Freshman Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) put up 18 points in the contest. This duo combined for the first 21 Saint Francis U points in the game.

"Our transition offense was much improved along with our defensive pressure tonight, those are two things we really stressed to progress on from our last exhibition game," said SFU head coach Joe Haigh.

Pitt Johnstown scored the first two baskets of the game to take an early lead, but once SFU took control at the 17:22 mark of the opening period it did not look back. The Red Flash put up 57 first-half points on a 45% shooting clip.

Hayward, fresh off a 40-point outburst against California (Pa.), put up 21 points in the period, with nine points coming from the free-throw line. Wynn and Kamari Talley (Camden, N.J./Woodrow Wilson) also reached double-figures before halftime.

In the second period of play, the Red Flash kept up its "runnin' and gunnin'" style of play scoring another 54 points in the frame. SFU also extended its lead to as much as 40 with eight minutes to play.

Brooklyn Taylor (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) also added 18 points after knocking down three triples, while Talley posted a 17 point, seven rebound game. Corissa Archer (Clermont, Fla./East Ridge) registered eight points and eight rebounds off the bench for the Red Flash. SFU shot 49.5% (45-91) for the game, despite only hitting 7-of-28 shots from beyond the arc.

Saint Francis opens up its 47th varsity season on Sunday at Ohio State, tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.

"The experience of playing these types of games early in the season is great for us, we want to improve and playing some of the best teams in the country will do that for us," Haigh continued.
