LORETTO, Pa. (Nov. 22, 2014) – The Saint Francis U men's basketball team won its second November game of the season for the first time since the 2010-11 season, defeating University of Maryland Eastern Shore 57-53 Saturday afternoon at DeGol Arena.
Â
"We knew going into the game it was going to be a physical and defensive battle," said coach Krimmel. "We knew it was going be a possession game and we were going to have to do a good job limiting their looks around the basket, limiting them to one shot."
Â
The Red Flash held UMES to 42% shooting clip in the game, while hitting on 48% of their own.
Â
Despite starting 0-5 from the field, the Red Flash (2-2) went on a 7-0 run to take the early lead, something they held onto for the games next 34 and a half minutes until UMES (1-4) tied it at 51 with 2:21 left to play.
Â
Ben Millaud-Meunier (Montreal, Quebec/Vanier) put Saint Francis up 19-10 with 10 straight Red Flash points including nine points from beyond the arc and a free throw. Millaud-Meunier helped the Red Flash shoot 6-12 from beyond the arch in the first half and 7-18 in the game.
Â
Freshman
Basil Thompson (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) put the Red Flash up 26-15 on a pair of free throws with 6:35 to play in the first half. Despite falling behind 11, the Hawks ended the half on an 11-to-5 run to pull within five at 31-26 at the half.
Â
"We were doing a good job executing offensively, especially with their length, athleticism, and size. I'm proud of the way the guys battled; we continue to grow as a group. Defensively we have now reached our goals for four straight games and continue to challenge these guys to defend, rebound and when we do that we're going to give ourselves a chance to win. I thought our guys did a great job of limiting them to one shot, especially early when we couldn't get anything going offensively," said coach Krimmel.
Â
Three of
Greg Brown (Odenton, Md./Archbishop Spalding)'s nine points came with the score tied at 51. Greg drew a foul on a layup and sank the ensuing free throw to complete the three-point play, putting the Red Flash up 54-51 with 47 seconds left in the game.
Â
"Both
Greg Brown (Odenton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and
Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) as captains do great things off the court, but I think today's a perfect example of the things they can bring on the court; stepping up, making plays, and being the big brothers out there on the court," said coach Krimmel.
Â
The Red Flash made four of their five free throws in the final minute to secure the 57-53 home win.
Â
Senior
Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) scored 13 of his game high 19 points in the second half and added 10 rebounds for the Red Flash. Earl cashed in his second double-double of the 2014-15 season and the 22nd of his SFU career.
Â
"Coach Krimmel and my teammates believe in me no matter if I make a mistake or not, just keep playing hard and rebounding the ball. I have to give credit to my teammates and my coaches for allowing me to roam, be free and help get a win," said team captain
Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter).
Â
The Red Flash head on the road next for a three-game road trip starting in Texas on Nov. 25 to take on the Longhorns at 7 p.m. They will return home Dec. 6 when they faceoff against Albany at 2 p.m.
