JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (Nov. 5, 2014) - Approximately 45 people were on hand Wednesday afternoon as Saint Francis Athletics Administrators and staff and Cambria County officials announced The Red Flash women's basketball team's one-game trip to the Cambria County War Memorial Arena during the upcoming 2014-15 season.
The Red Flash will host Bowling Green on Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. as another edition of SFU's partnership with the War Memorial. The Saint Francis U men's team, who last called the War Memorial home during the early 1970s, played Navy at the venue on Nov. 11, 2013 as a part of the City of Johnstown's Veteran's Day celebration.
"We are really excited for the opportunity to play at the War Memorial," said SFU head coach
Joe Haigh. "The tradition of basketball with Saint Francis in Johnstown is rich and we are happy to compete against Bowling Green here on December 13th."
One of four home courts the team has used since basketball became a sport at Saint Francis in 1905, the War Memorial served as the backdrop for many early men's games against Duquesne and Saint Vincent before becoming the team's fulltime home from 1971 to 1973.
Saint Francis opens up its 2014 campaign at Ohio State on Nov. 16. The Red Flash plays its second home exhibition game on Nov. 10 when the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown visits Loretto for a 7 p.m. match-up.
