Walter goal highlights quarterfinal loss at FDU

BOX SCORE TEANECK, N.J. – The Saint Francis U women's soccer team saw its season come to an end Friday with a 3-1 setback against Fairleigh Dickinson in the semifinal round of the 2014 Northeast Conference Tournament.

The young Red Flash played the top-seeded Knights close for much of the day, but a Connie Lewis goal in the 87th minute dashed any hopes of an SFU comeback.

"I'm really proud of the way we kept fighting until the end," said head coach Brenda van Stralen, who wrapped up her 11th season in Loretto.  "Every year we set a goal of making it to the playoffs and this is the fifth year in a row we did that – that says something about this kids and this program.  We're disappointed to lose, but I'm proud of the way we played."

The Flash more than held its own in the first half, at times dictating the pace of the game, but couldn't find the back of the net.  The half's only goal came off the foot of Katey Arathoon in the 42nd minute.

The Knights took a 2-0 lead in the 69th minute, but it took only three minutes for SFU to pull back within one.

All-NEC second teamer Mackenzie Walter (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) buried a penalty kick for her fifth goal of the season.  The senior forward also upped her point total to a squad-best 11.

Saint Francis ends its season with a 3-12-5 mark, including a 3-2-3 mark in NEC play.
