Saint Francis Drops Keystone Battle at Duquesne

PITTSBURGH (Dec. 18, 2014) – It was a tough shooting night for the Saint Francis U women's basketball team as it lost to Duquesne, 92-52, on Thursday evening inside the A.J. Palumbo Center.

The Red Flash (0-8) shot just 29% (20-68) from the field and 18% (6-33) from three-point land. However, Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) had no problem scoring for SFU as the junior guard notched 15 points to go along with seven rebounds, just two points shy of her season high.

"We weren't happy with the way we finished the game tonight," said SFU head coach Joe Haigh.

It was also a tough night offensively for the NCAA's leading scorer Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk), but she still came away with 10 points. The Dukes (7-4) scored 51 second half points compared to just 22 for Saint Francis. A large portion of their total scoring output came from Amadea Szamosi, who finished with 28 to lead all scorers.

"We gave up to many offensive rebounds and we are fouling too much, those were two big reasons why Duquesne had such a strong second half," Haigh continued.

The Red Flash battled in a fast moving first period starting from the opening tip. SFU scored the first basket as Hayward found Corissa Archer (Clermont, Fla./East Ridge) for a wide open lay-in.

Midway through the half, Brock went on a tear scoring eight consecutive points giving SFU a 15-12 lead and some momentum. Duquesne then closed out the first half on a late 12-5 run and held a 41-30 advantage at halftime.

Shaqeia Stokes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) scored the first two baskets for Saint Francis to open the second half and got the Flash back within single digits. Duquesne held its own despite the small surge from SFU and went on a 24-9 run, which extended its lead to 26 and put the game out of reach.

Stokes finished with 10 points and six rebounds for SFU, while Allison Thompson (Morgantown, W. Va./Morgantown) scored her first collegiate points when she knocked down a 3-pointer with 56 seconds to play in the game.

Saint Francis returns to the hardcourt on Sunday after making the voyage to Coastal Carolina, tip-off is slated for 5 p.m. in the "Crescom Bank Carolinas Challenge."
