Mountaineers Top Red Flash in Non-Conference Finale

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (Dec. 29, 2014) – A seven minute scoring drought to open the second period cost the Saint Francis U women's basketball team against West Virginia as it lost, 101-46, inside the WVU Coliseum on Monday evening.

It was the second game in two nights for the Red Flash (1-10), who will look to rebound as Northeast Conference play begins this upcoming weekend in Loretto. The Mountaineers (10-2), who were ranked No. 21 in the nation until the new poll was released, got out to an early lead and never looked back.

Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) led Saint Francis with 15 points, while Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) had a complete effort with eight points, six rebounds, and five assists. West Virginia saw four players reach double-figures, led by Bria Holmes and Teana Muldrow, each had 23 points.

It was a slow starting first half offensively for the Red Flash as they quickly faced an 18-4 deficit. The Mountaineers used a season-record eight 3-pointers in a half to get up by as much as 28 in the first period.

After a triple from Hope Phillips (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep), SFU narrowed the margin nearly back to single digits. Later in the frame a 7-0 WVU run was halted after a lay-in from Adila Gathers (Buffalo, N.Y./Tapestry Charter). Hayward hit a triple and completed a 5-0 run for the Red Flash. WVU then closed out the final 10 minutes of the half on a 19-8 run and led 46-22 at the break.

SFU finished the game shooting just 25% (17-68), while West Virginia was over 54% (39-72). Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) recorded a career-high seven rebounds for SFU. Gathers and Cydney Smith (Port Tobacco, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) each earned their first starts in a Red Flash uniform.

Saint Francis opens Northeast Conference play on Saturday when Wagner visits Loretto for a 1 p.m. match-up.
