KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Dec. 3, 2014) –
Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) broke the all-time three-pointers record Wednesday evening, but it was not enough as the Saint Francis U women's basketball team fell to #14 Tennessee, 111-44.
The senior captain hit six triples totaling her career number to 238. Hayward passed sharpshooter Stacy Alexander who held the record of 235 since 1996. Her night didn't stop there, she also broke the Thompson-Boling Arena record for three-point attempts with 19 and finished as the game's leading scorer with 26.
Saint Francis forced 17 UT turnovers in front of a crowd of 9,126, which is UT's highest total of the season. Tennessee used a 52-8 paint scoring stronghold against the Red Flash (0-5), which proved to be a significant advantage. To go along with that, the Lady Vols (5-2) received 65 bench points. In the rebounding battle, UT held a 71-28 advantage.
SFU started the game forcing back-to-back Tennessee turnovers, and it was tied for the first 2:16 of play. The Flash trailed by just five nearly six minutes in before the Lady Vols went on an 11-0 run and started to take control of the period.
UT ended the first half on a 17-5 run and held a 53-21 lead at halftime largely in part to 32 bench points, compared to none for the Red Flash. Tennessee also shot a staggering 54% (18-33) from the field in the opening half, compared to just 19% (7-37) for SFU.
Tennessee held Saint Francis to just one basket over the first seven minutes of the second period and held a 49-point lead at the time of SFU's second basket.
Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) finished with 10 points, she was the only other Flash player in double-figures.
Shaqeia Stokes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) added four points and three rebounds, while
Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) and
Cydney Smith (Port Tobacco, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) each scored two points.
All 13 active players made an appearance for Saint Francis, including freshman
Rochelle Reece (Ajax, Ontario, Canada/Pickering) who made her collegiate debut.
The Red Flash returns to action Saturday afternoon as George Mason visits Loretto for a 6 p.m. contest. SFU was bested by the Patriots last season in Fairfax, 97-62.
