LIU Brooklyn Squeezes By Red Flash in Think Pink Game

BOX SCORE POSTGAME INTERVIEWS

LORETTO, Pa. (Feb. 15, 2014)
– Behind two double-double efforts, LIU Brooklyn narrowly defeated the Saint Francis University women's basketball team, 69-66, in the Seventh Annual DelGrosso Think Pink game on Saturday afternoon.

Alli Williams (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) and Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) each posted 14 points for the Red Flash (10-14, 8-5); Williams also added 11 rebounds to complete a double-double of her own. Cleandra Roberts had 23 points and 11 rebounds, while Fanny Cavallo registered 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Blackbirds (7-17, 5-8).

"We have to learn from this and move past it, we did not play our game today and we weren't aggressive enough," SFU head coach Joe Haigh said.

SFU shot just eight free throws total in the contest, and did not earn one trip to the charity stripe in the first period of play.

Saint Francis started the game on an 8-2 run with two three-pointers coming from Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk), the six-point lead ended up being the largest of the game for the Frankies. LIU Brooklyn took its first lead after free throws at the 12:44 mark.

Each team held leads and battled back-and-forth for the remainder of the period, as there were four ties and seven lead changes in the frame. The Blackbirds led 36-34 at halftime after a triple went in at the buzzer by Sophie Bhasin.

SFU went on a small run to open the second period and took a five-point lead after a triple from Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy). LIU Brooklyn then followed with a 9-0 run and took its largest lead of the game (45-41) at the 13:23 mark.

After several lead changes, Shaqeia Stokes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) tied the game at 65 after a lay-in with 3:16 to play. Later, Bridget Murphy (Bethlehem, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) knocked down 1-of-2 from the free throw line to give SFU the one point advantage.

With 32 seconds to play, Cleandra Roberts made a lay-up to retake the lead for the Blackbirds. SFU was unable to score on its next possession, and LIU knocked down both of its free throws to take the game.

Shaqeia Stokes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) added 11 points and five rebounds in the starting role, while Erin Blaine (Washington, D.C./H.D. Woodson) shot 5-of-10 and posted 10 points.

SFU forced 27 turnovers in the game, but fell in the rebounding battle, 48-35.

Saint Francis returns to action on Monday evening as Central Connecticut State comes to Loretto for a 7 p.m. match-up. SFU won the first meeting in New Britain, Conn., 106-97, in overtime on Jan 6.

SFU encourages fans to wear black on Monday for the 'Blackout Game'. The first 120 students will receive a free black t-shirt.
