BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Feb. 22, 2014) – In its 2013-14 home finale, just about everything went right for the Saint Francis U men's basketball team.
The Red Flash clinched its first Northeast Conference postseason berth since the 2010-11 season by dismantling LIU Brooklyn, 83-64, in front of an announced attendance of 1,627 – its largest crowd at the Stokes Center in five years.
Stephon Whyatt (Jersey City, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) came off the bench to score a season-high 21 points – including 12 in the second half – and
Ronnie Drinnon (Jamestown, Ohio/Greenview) scored a career-high 19 as SFU swept its season series from LIU (8-18, 3-10) for the first time since the 2003-04 campaign.
"I thought our guys, for 40 minutes, paid attention to details offensively and defensively," said Flash coach
Rob Krimmel. "Down the stretch [LIU] made some plays and our guys responded. [Ronnie] made some tough baskets and everybody that played battled."
Currently in a tie for fifth place in the league standings, the Frankies (9-18, 7-7) now hold head-to-head tiebreakers over all four teams behind it as it jockeys for position in the final seedings.
Drinnon scored 13 points after halftime when the Red Flash pulled way.
Malik Harmon (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) added 18 points on 4-of-5 3-point shooting and he and Whyatt each had five assists.
The Blackbirds led for much of the first half until a 3-pointer from Harmon and two by
Ben Millaud-Meunier (Montreal, Quebec/Vanier) scrapped Saint Francis into the lead, 19-17, which grew to 41-23 by halftime.
Jason Brickman led the Blackbirds with 23 points.
While LIU committed just two more turnovers than Saint Francis, the Red Flash used its team speed to rack up 21-to-6 advantage in points off turnovers and a 12-to-2 margin in fast break points.
The Flash improved to 4-2 in games during which it shoots 50 percent or better from the floor. SFU fired at a 52.6 percent clip, while the Blackbirds managed a respectable 46.3 percent. Led by seven apiece from Drinnon and
Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter), Saint Francis controlled the boards to the tune of 34-28.
The Red Flash hits the road on Thursday to play Wagner in a possible preview of an NEC Quarterfinal matchup. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
