Second Half Run Lifts Terriers Over Saint Francis U

BOX SCORE BROOKLYN, N.Y (Feb. 22, 2014) – A 16-0 run by St. Francis Brooklyn midway through the second period was the difference as it bested the Saint Francis University women's basketball team, 82-74, on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Flash (11-15, 9-6) battled back to get within four with two minutes to play, but were not able to complete the comeback against the Terriers (17-9, 8-7). Alli Williams (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) scored a game-high 24 points and led the Frankies in rebounding with nine, while Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) dropped 19.

"St. Francis Brooklyn was more physical than us today, we need to do a better job playing with great intensity for the full 40 minutes, something that we did not do this afternoon," SFU head coach Joe Haigh said.

Both squads played a fairly even first period as there were six tied scores and six lead changes in the period. SFU led 18-12 after a lay-in
from Bridget Murphy (Bethlehem, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) and it looked like Saint Francis would be in control for the remainder of the half.

The Red Flash took its biggest lead of the contest with 6:15 to play in the first half after a lay-up from Williams. The Terriers regained the lead after a buzzer-beating triple and took a 32-29 lead into the halftime break.

St. Francis Brooklyn extended its lead early in the second period, but a jumper from Erin Blaine (Washington, D.C./H.D. Woodson) got the Red Flash within two. Over the next three minutes, the Terriers put up 16 points compared to none for SFU, and SFBK put itself in the driver's seat.

Saint Francis U went on a 14-3 run down the stretch to get back in the game and trailed by four with 2:07 to play.

Corissa Archer (Clermont, Fla./East Ridge) was 6-of-6 from the free throw line and was an essential piece in SFU's comeback, but good free throw shooting from the Terriers iced the game for the home team.

"We also need to be smarter at times, we gave [St. Francis Brooklyn] way too many trips to the free throw line," Haigh continued.

The Red Flash forced 27 turnovers with its stifling full-court press in the contest. The Terriers shot 44% (24-54), compared to just 34% (24-70).

Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) scored 11 points off the bench and Archer finished with eight.

Saint Francis returns to action on Monday night as it travels to Mount St. Mary's for a 7 p.m. match-up. The Red Flash won the first meeting in Loretto on Jan. 20, 81-66.
