BOX SCORE NEW YORK (Feb. 6, 2014) – Saint Francis U men's basketball struggled to equal St. Francis Brooklyn's intensity as the Terriers downed the Frankies, 78-52, Thursday night. Saint Francis' season high three-game winning streak ended with the setback.
"We told the guys that there were two stats going into the game that were going to determine the outcome of the game, rebounds and turnovers," said SFU coach
Rob Krimmel." In the first half we were out rebounded 18-13 and had nine turnovers. On the road with a team that has only lost once at home, you can't give them second chances and free runs at the basket."
Saint Francis ended the first half with a wave of momentum, off
Stephon Whyatt (Jersey City, N.J./St. Peter's Prep)'s coast-to-coast dunk narrowing the Terriers lead to, 31-25.
St. Francis Brooklyn took advantage of their first half charity stripe attempts converting, 5-5, while the Red and White made, 2-7.
The Terriers opened up the second half shooting, 7-8, from the field while maintaining a 10-point cushion over the Frankies. Saint Francis failed to rally as the Terriers continued to build onto their lead that reached its peak, 78-52, off a deep three from P.J. Santavenere with 20 seconds remaining in the game.
"It was just one of those games were we could not get an easy bucket," said Krimmel. "Give credit to St. Francis Brooklyn – they made it tough on us. We have to regroup quickly and get ready for the three time defending champs on Saturday."
The Terriers controlled the boards, out rebounding SFU, 38-23. SFBK shot a deadly 73.1 percent in the second half, shooting 57.4 percent in the contest.
SFBK Sheldon Hagigal came off the bench to lead all scorers with a career high 23 point performance.
Dominique Major (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) and Whyatt led the Frankies with nine points apiece.
Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) and
Ronnie Drinnon (Jamestown, Ohio/Greenview) each grabbed six boards; Brown tallied eight points while Drinnon notched seven.
The Red Flash remains in Brooklyn for a Saturday afternoon matchup against LIU Brooklyn.
