First Half Surge Carries Red Flash Past LIU Brooklyn

BOX SCORE NEW YORK (Feb. 8, 2014) – The Saint Francis men's basketball team cruised to a, 74-58, road win over the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds at the Steinberg Wellness Center Saturday afternoon behind four double-digit scoring performances. The win marks SFU's first at the Wellness Center since it opened in 2006.

"We talked to our guys about being able to bounce back," said SFU coach Rob Krimmel. "We knew LIU Brooklyn was going to be a difficult place to play. They were going to make a run at some point and when they did we responded."

Stephon Whyatt (Jersey City, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) led the charge for the second consecutive game with a season-high 17 point performance, freshman Malik Harmon (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) netted 16 points, five boards and five assists, while Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) and Ben Millaud-Meunier (Montreal, Quebec/Vanier) both tallied 14 points.

Whyatt and Millaud-Meunier put on a first half 3-point shooting clinic, combining to drain 7 of 11 attempts while racking up 14 first half points apiece. The Flash (7-16; 5-5) went 9-17 from long range during the opening half – a season-best – while building a lead as large as 17 points.

The Blackbird closed out the half on a 10-3 run.

Saint Francis held a 45-37 advantage over LIU (7-16; 2-8) at the break.

LIU narrowed the Frankies' lead to nine with under two-minutes remaining, but thanks to Whyatt and Harmon connecting on 5-of-6 free throws, SFU iced the Blackbirds' late rally.

"We told the guys at halftime that defense is going to win the game," said Krimmel. "I thought we did a great job defensively limiting LIU to one shot and making the driving lanes smaller."

Millaud-Meunier connected on a jumper in the lane giving the Flash a 12-11 advantage at the 14-minute mark in the first half. The Frankies never trailed after that.

Saint Francis separated themselves from the Blackbirds scoring 31 bench points to LIU's 16. SFU also converted 14 LIU turnovers into 23 points.

SFU dished out a season-high 18 assists.

LIU's E.J. Reed marked game-highs with 20 points and 10 rebounds. SFU held Jason Brickman to six assists.  The NCAA assists leader, Brickman averages 10 assists per game.

The Red Flash returns home for a Thursday matchup against Robert Morris. Saint Francis lost a heartbreaker to the Colonials, 73-68, on Jan. 16.
