EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 1, 2014) – For the second straight game, the Saint Francis U men's basketball team couldn't keep the pace with a hot-shooting opponent, this time falling to Mount St. Mary's 78-55 Saturday at Knott Arena.
The setback marked the first consecutive losses for the Red Flash in 36 days, while the Mountaineers stretched their win streak against SFU to eight games. Mount St. Mary's also secured a top-four seed and a home game in the upcoming Northeast Conference Tournament.Â
"This isn't the way we wanted to end the regular season, but these guys have put themselves in a position to play past the regular season and into March," said Saint Francis coach
Rob Krimmel. "We've got to move past this and turn our attention to whoever we draw in the playoffs. It's a new season at this point and everybody's got a chance to win three in a row."
With Bryant's win over LIU Brooklyn Saturday afternoon, the sixth-seeded Frankies will be Bryant bound for the NEC Quarterfinals.
The Mountaineers came out charged up on Senior Day, opening up a double digit lead 13 minutes into the contest, 29-17, on a Sam Prescott 3-pointer.
Mount St. Mary's hit on its first seven 3-point field goal attempts and shot 58.6 percent from the field. Conversely, the Red Flash shot 39.1 percent and hit on 1 of 9 attempts from beyond the arc to go into the locker room facing a 45-25 deficit.
"Anytime you're involved in someone's senior day, there's going to be a lot of emotion in the building," said Krimmel. "Mount has got three really good seniors and I thought they really came to play.Â
"When we did get looks in the first half, we didn't knock 'em down. There were a few free throws we left out there, a few layups we left on the rim and a few more shots we just didn't make."
The Mountaineers saw their lead balloon to 30 points midway through the second half, but the Flash responded with a 13-0 run to make the score 60-43. Mount St. Mary's scored the game's next six points to regain momentum and cruise to the win.
Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) led the Red Flash with 12 points and seven rebounds.Â
Ollie Jackson (Dallas, Texas/Pinkston ) and
Dominique Major (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) each finished up with eight points.
Prescott paced Mount St. Mary's three double-digit scorers with 26 points.
