Saint Francis Fights Off Robert Morris Comeback on Senior Day

BOX SCORE POSTGAME INTERVIEWS

LORETTO, Pa. (March 1, 2014)
– For the second consecutive season, the Saint Francis U women's basketball team took down Robert Morris inside the Stokes Athletic Center, this time it was a 78-73 win on senior day.

The Red Flash (12-16, 10-7) started the game on a 17-2 run over a six-minute span. Alli Williams (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) scored eight points during the run and finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds.

"We got off to a great start today, we had a great cushion early in the game," SFU head coach Joe Haigh said.

The Colonials (17-11, 13-4) battled back within nine with 10 minutes to play, but that was the closest it would get in the first period. Saint Francis continued to knock down three-pointers as it hit five in the first half, and held a 47-30 advantage at halftime.

Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) scored the first basket of the second half on a three-pointer, and it put the junior at 1,000 career points. She became the 23rd player in Saint Francis women's basketball history to reach the mark.

Hayward then scored seven straight points for Saint Francis and Alli Williams (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) capped off a 12-2 run to put SFU up by 25 (59-34), its largest lead of the game at the 16:34 mark.

Robert Morris then began its comeback, the Colonials embarked on a 30-9 over the next 11:35 to get within four points of the Red Flash. Saint Francis went without a point for over five minutes during the run from RMU.

Saint Francis was able to respond down the stretch and clutch free throw shooting put the game away from the Flash.

Bridget Murphy (Bethlehem, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) registered 12 points off the bench for SFU, while Rebecca Keegan (Jessup, Pa./Valley View) added eight points and eight rebounds. Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) finished with a game-high 27 points.

"I am really happy about the way we played today, especially for our seniors," Haigh continued.

Saint Francis closes out its 2013-14 regular season on Monday evening as Wagner comes to Loretto for a 7 p.m. match-up. SFU won the meeting in Staten Island on Feb. 1, 92-78.
