BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Sept. 28, 2014) – After leading for nearly 60 minutes, the Saint Francis U women's soccer team allowed a late Bucknell goal as the teams battled to a highly entertaining 1-1 draw Sunday at the Stokes Soccerplex.
Â
The Red Flash came out with a swagger that was lacking in its last outing against Oakland, and was able to control the tempo for most of the contest.Â
Â
The efficient Saint Francis offense took only 11 shots, but seven of those were on goal, including
Mackenzie Walter (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg)'s short-range missile in the 25th minute that staked the Flash to its lengthy lead.
Â
Walter struck a ball served up by
Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac) and
Allison LaDuke (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) from the right side and beat the diving Bucknell keeper to the left corner of the goal.
Â
A senior captain, Walter racked up a game-high six shots in the match.
Â
Maddie Mulford's tying goal in 84th minute was the only blemish on an otherwise outstanding day for Flash goalkeeper
Romina Kunze (Frankfurt, Germany/Carl-von-Weinberg-Schule).
Â
Kunze ended the afternoon with nine saves including several of the highlight reel variety late in the contest.
Â
Her signature play of the game came in the second overtime as she faced a quick-developing one-on-one. After slipping behind most the SFU defense, a Bucknell player shook one last defender to setup a prime shot at a golden goal.
Â
But Kunze charged to meet the Bison player at the edge of the penalty box and wrapped up the ball before a shot was taken.
Â
The play drew a standing ovation from the 121 in attendance.
Â
The Red Flash remains at home to play Wagner Friday as it opens Northeast Conference play. The match will get underway at 4 p.m.
