Team Effort Propels Red Flash Over Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (Jan. 26, 2015) – Four players reached double-figures as Saint Francis U took down Wagner, 87-74, inside Spiro Sports Center on Monday in a game that was moved up due to inclement weather in the area.

Several career-highs were set for the Red Flash this evening, starting with a career-high 22 points for Corissa Archer (Clermont, Fla./East Ridge) who broke the career-mark she set on Saturday of 18 points at Mount St. Mary's. Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) flirted with a triple-double as she had a line of 19 points, a career-high 13 rebounds, and seven assists. Finally, Hope Phillips (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) scored a career-best eight points against the Seahawks.

Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) dropped 17 points, while Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) added 13 to round out the players in double-figures for SFU. It was the first game the Flash had four players in double-digits in the point's category since the first two games of the season against Ohio State and Buffalo. Saint Francis led the entire ball game and held the advantage in rebounding, 41-32.

"We really shot the ball well in the first half and it's a great win for our kids. There were plenty of time where we could have cracked and given our lead up, but tonight we kept our composure," SFU head coach Joe Haigh said.

It was a very fast paced and exciting first-half, one that certainly benefitted the Red Flash. They tied their season-high for points in the first period in Northeast Conference play with 48. SFU also had three players reach double-figures in the first half as Brock had 13, while Hayward and Wynn had 10 each.

SFU started the game with eight quick points, Brock and Hayward each hit a triple in the first two minutes to set the tone. The Flash led by 11 at the 12:26 mark after Brock's third 3-pointer of the opening period, she went 3-of-4 from downtown in the first frame.

With 2:50 to go in the first half, Brock finished a lay-in and Saint Francis took its largest lead at 17 points (44-27). Hayward then secured a pass and made a basket to give the Flash the 48-34 lead at halftime. SFU forced 16 Wagner turnovers in the first period, several of which occurred before the Seahawks could get past midcourt.

Saint Francis kept Wagner away from striking distance for the first portion of the second half as the Flash kept its advantage in double-figures. There was a little scare when Brock picked up her fourth personal foul and the Seahawks were within nine at the 4:48 mark.

It was Archer that put the lead back to 11 on another basket. She finished 8-of-10 from the field after going a perfect 9-of-9 against The Mount on Saturday.

"[Corissa] Archer played another great game for us tonight and we just had a great balanced scoring attack. We got help from everyone on the roster," Haigh continued.

Wagner chose to foul down the stretch and the Red Flash was able to beat their traps and knock down enough from the charity stripe to come away with the 13-point victory.

Saint Francis U will host Fairleigh Dickinson (5-13, 2-5 NEC) on Saturday in Loretto. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
