LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis men's basketball team used a season-high 13 three pointers while holding Wagner to just 18.8 percent from beyond the arc as the Red Flash cruised to a 85-68 victory in the NEC opener for both teams.
Dominique Major (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) and
Ollie Jackson (Dallas, Texas/Pinkston ) each made four threes for the Red Flash. The Flash moved to 4-0 at home this season. That's the best start for the program at home since it started 6-0 during the 2003-04 season.
Both teams shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, but the Flash carried a 41-33 lead into the intermission due largely to making seven three pointer to Wagner's two. Saint Francis jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the first four minutes thanks to three pointers from Jackson and
Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) and a breakaway dunk by
Greg Brown (Odenton, Md./Archbishop Spalding). He finished with 11 points, three steals and three assists.
SFU (7-5, 1-0) extended its lead to 15 with a 10-2 run midway through the first half. Major and
Ben Millaud-Meunier (Montreal, Quebec/Vanier) each made threes on the run that gave the Flash a 29-14 lead with 8:33 left in the half. Wagner answered with a 7-0 run late in the first half to cut the Red Flash lead to 38-32, but Jackson hit his second three of the half with 48 seconds left to stop the run. Jackson's 19-point effort is one shy of his season high of 20 at Navy in November.
Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) recorded his third double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds, and he did most of his damage in the second half as he helped the Red Flash keep the Seahawks at arm's length. Brown had 15 points and seven rebounds in the second half, and he fueled a 10-0 run early in the second half with a layup and a three pointer.
Patrick Wrencher (West Chester, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) completed the run with a jumper in the lane to give the Flash a 59-40 lead with 13:00 left. The Flash made 28 field goals in the game: 13 from beyond the arc and 15 in the paint. SFU outscored Wagner on the inside, 30-24. The Flash also assisted on 18 of its 28 field goals.
Malik Harmon (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) led the team with six helpers. Wrencher finished with a career-high seven points and tied his career high with five rebounds.
Back-to-back three pointers from Major gave the Flash its largest lead of the game at 66-44 with 9:51 to play. He matched his season high with 12 points, all coming from long range. The Flash's 13 three pointers surpassed its previous season high of 11, set at Navy and at home against Albany. Wagner finished just 3-of-16 (18.8 percent) from beyond the arc.
Ronnie Drinnon (Jamestown, Ohio/Greenview) added nine points and eight rebounds – seven of which came in the second half – to give him a full 50 rebounds in SFU's previous four games. Head coach
Rob Krimmel is now 2-1 in NEC openers as he earned his first career victory against Wagner on Saturday. It's SFU's first win against the Seahawks in nearly four years, last defeating Wagner in Feb. 2011.
The 85 points scored are the most for Saint Francis in an NEC opener since the 1990-91 season in a 89-62 victory over LIU Brooklyn. The Flash made the NCAA tournament that season.
Saint Francis returns to action Monday night at DeGol Arena when western Pennsylvania rival Robert Morris comes to Loretto for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff.
