Women’s Soccer Ties CCSU, 1-1

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The Saint Francis women's soccer team halted a brief two-game skid with a draw at Central Connecticut on Sunday afternoon. The Red Flash tied the Blue Devils, 1-1. The Flash's two leading scorers accounted for the SFU goal. Casey Gallaher (Sidman, Pa./Forest Hills) scored her fifth goal of the season, all in conference games, on an assist from Allison LaDuke (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) in the second half.

Central Connecticut moved out to an early lead in the seventh minute on Delaney Lancor's sixth goal of the season. She found herself in the right spot on a rebound from a shot by Alex Zampini and deposited the ball to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead.

The Red Flash defense stiffened following the goal as CCSU did not manage another shot on goal through the rest of the first half. On the other side, the Flash turned up the pressure in the final minutes of the half. SFU had three corner kicks in the final five minutes, and Shannon McGinnis (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) had a header go high over the net on the third of those corner kicks.

The Flash continued to force the play early in the second half. Gallaher had a shot on goal stopped by Nicky Turley in the 52nd minute, but she got the better of Turley just three minutes later. LaDuke sent a short cross from the left wing in Gallaher's direction, and she tipped it in over Turley to make it 1-1. Gallaher leads the team with 13 points, while LaDuke is second with nine.

Both teams had chances to take the lead late in the second half. CCSU had five shots in a five minute stretch from minutes 77-82, but only one reached goalkeeper Romina Kunze (Frankfurt, Germany/Carl-von-Weinberg-Schule) thanks to three blocked shots and one missing the net. Kunze made one save in the series as she finished with four saves for the game. In the 89th minute, an SFU corner kick resulted in a shot for Brittany Hasson (Leola, Pa./Warwick), but it went wide. SFU had a season-high eight corner kicks in the match.

The teams each had just one shot on goal through the two overtime periods. The Red Flash's came late in the first overtime when Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac) was stopped in the 99th minute.

The Flash will look to clinch a berth in the NEC Tournament in Friday's regular season finale against Fairleigh Dickinson. SFU will honor its senior class prior to the 3 p.m. match.
