Volleyball Tames Terriers for First NEC Win

BROOKLYN, N.Y.- Hannah Kutny (Clifton Park, N.Y./Catholic Central) had a team-high 14 kills and a match-high 21 digs as the Red Flash evened their NEC record at 1-1 with a four-set victory over St. Francis-Brooklyn on Saturday.

SFU defeated SFBK 23-25, 25-15,25-20,25-22 on Saturday in Brooklyn Heights. Kelsey Roush (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) and Maria Cup (Chesterland, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) joined Kutny in double digits with 11 and 10 kills, respectfully as SFU used a balanced offense to get the win.

The first set was a back-and-forth affair that saw the two teams split the first 14 points. SFU opened up an 11-7 lead on a pair of SFBK errors and a Roush kill, but the Terriers rallied back to tie the set at 13. The SFBK momentum continued, as they led 24-20. A Cup kill and Roush ace closed the lead to 24-23 but the Terriers took set one on a kill.

Set two took a different tone as the Red Flash used a run midway through the set to take control. Amelia Metzler (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield) had an ace and the Flash used a pair of setting errors to open an 11-6 lead. SFU kept the pressure on as Kutny and Sophie Murdock (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion ) each had kills to lead Saint Francis to an 18-10 advantage. The Red Flash defense was on point in the second set, holding St. Francis to a meager .081 hitting percentage en route to the 25-15 set win.

After the teams split the first 10 points of set three, the Red Flash started to take control. Murdock had a pair of kills and the defense forced a series of attack errors as SFU led 13-7. The Terriers tried to rally but kills from Cup and Roush stopped any momentum by SFBK. The defense took over, forcing four errors as the Flash took set three 25-20.

Maria Cup (Chesterland, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) had a pair of aces early in set four, part of a 6-0 run for the Flash as Saint Francis took an 11-4 lead early. The teams would trade points until Murdock came on serve. She served out five straight points, featuring three kills from Kutny as the Flash opened the lead up to 19-10. The lead would grow to 21-12 before a furious Terrier rally shrunk the lead to 21-19. But a pair of errors halted the SFBK run and a Roush kill put the Flash on the brink of victory. After a pair of Terrier kills made it 24-22, the defense rose to the occasion and forced an error to seal the win.

Metzler had 34 assists in the match to lead all players while Amanda Schiavo (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area (Bowling Green)) chipped in 13 digs to help lead the defense. Saint Francis now sits at 1-1 in the NEC and 3-14 overall. They will stay in Brooklyn to take on LIU on Sunday. Match time is set for 1pm.
