Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Dan Griffin

Women's Basketball Races Past Rams in Exhibition Win

LORETTO, PA- Freshman Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) had 24 points, leading four Red Flash in double figures as the women's basketball team rolled to a 90-71 win over the Ryerson (Ca.) Rams in an open exhibition at DeGol Arena.

Kovatch had 24 in her SFU debut while Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) dropped 20 points, picking up from her All-NEC Freshman Team season a year ago. Katie Reese (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) had 13 points and Halee Adams (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) had 11 points and eight rebounds to lead a balanced Red Flash attack.

Ryerson started quickly in the first quarter, jumping out to an early 7-3 lead. The Flash responded with a 13-2 run, sparked by two Wynn threes and a pair of Samiah Bethel (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) jumpers. SFU continued to carry the momentum out of the media time out as Resse and Taylor Allison (State College, Pa./State College) each hit threes to give Saint Francis a double digit lead at 22-12. The Rams would rally behind forward Sophia Paska, she had a trio of buckets late in the first quarter to cut into the SFU lead, the Flash would lead 26-21 after one and Paska would lead the Rams with 20 points on the day.

The Red Flash would force 27 turnovers on Saturday, leading to 40 SFU points. It would be the full-court press of the Flash that fueled a second quarter run. Kovatch had a pair of lay-ins off turnovers and a three by Madison Johnson (Knox, Pa./Keystone) stretched the lead back out to double figures at 36-23. Ryerson would storm back, as the Flash went cold for a stretch in the second quarter. The Rams reeled off a 15-2 run to tie the game at 38 with just under four minutes in the half. SFU responded by forcing three Ram turnovers and Wynn had eight points in a 10-2 Red Flash run to grab a 48-40 lead. Halee Adams (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) would beat the halftime buzzer with a jumper to give SFU a 50-44 lead at the half.

Saint Francis blew the game open in the third quarter, out scoring Ryerson 27-9. The Red Flash opened the quarter on a 15-3 run in the first three minutes. A pair of Wynn threes and a three-point play by Kovatch highlighted the run as SFU broke out to a 62-47 lead. The lead would grow to as many as 25 as Adams and Kovatch took over in the quarter's final minutes. Adams had seven of her 11 points in the quarter and Kovatch continued her sharp shooting with a pair of threes to give SFU a 79-54 lead after three quarters.

Reese and Johnson each had breakaway lay-ups off turnovers to start the fourth as the Red Flash led by as many as 30 before taking their foot off the gas. Ryerson would hit some shots in garbage time as Saint Francis cruised to a 19-point victory. Ryerson out rebounded the Flash 55-47 led by Faatimah A who had 10. Samiah Bethel (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) led the Red Flash with nine rebounds as four players had at least five boards in the contest. Bethel also had a game-high five steals.

The Flash shot the ball well, going 34-89 for the contest (38%) and 17-44 (38%) from three-point range. They will look to carry on the momentum from the exhibition win over to Cincinnati where they take on the Bearcats on Saturday, November 14th. Tip time has still not been determined.
