Late Rally Gives Women’s Soccer 2-1 Win

EMMITSBURG, Md. – A late rally for the Saint Francis women's soccer team pushed the Red Flash to a 2-1 victory at Mount St. Mary's on Sunday afternoon. The win moved the Flash to 2-0 in Northeast Conference play.

The Mount took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute on Emma Blair's header. The goal, her third of the season, came after a header pass from Lauren Bogardus set Blair up for the score. Blair led Mount St. Mary's with two shots, both on goal. Mount St. Mary's led the Red Flash in shots in the first half, 6-4, while also winning in corner kicks, 5-1.

The script flipped in the second half. Saint Francis amped up the pressure and really made life tough for the Mountaineers' defense. Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac) hit a crossbar in the 54th minute. Allison LaDuke (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) and Paige Butler (Osprey, Fla./Venice) each had shots miss. All told, the Flash put five shots and executed three corner kicks leading up to the 69th minute. Butler had a game-high seven shots, including five in the second half. SFU outshot Mount St. Mary's, 10-1, in the second half and 14-7 for the match.

It was the third of those three corner kicks that led to the tying goal. Morales put the ball in play from the corner, and less than a minute later, Casey Gallaher (Sidman, Pa./Forest Hills) scored her second goal in as many games when she beat Vicky Cocozza from about 15 yards out.

The Flash continued the pressure as the second half wore on. In the 78th minute, Morales took her corner kick and scored directly from that attempt, beating Cocozza to the upper left corner. The goal is Morales' second of the season. Mount St. Mary's failed to mount a chance following the go-ahead goal.

Morales finished with three shots, while LaDuke had two.

The Red Flash returns home to face Bryant on Friday at 3 p.m. The game will be shown live on NEC Front Row.
