LORETTO, PA- Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) went for 30 points, leading four players in double figures as Saint Francis scored the most points in regulation since the 2013-14 season in a 106-74 win over Coastal Carolina on Wednesday night.
Kovatch's 30 points are the most by a freshman since at least the 98-99 season (when the NEC archives started). The freshman hit on 11-20 shots from the field and 5-6 from three-point range. She also dished out four assists. The Flash as a team had 26 assists, the most since 12/21/12 when they had 30 in a win over Wright State.
"I thought we shared the ball really well tonight," head coach
Joe Haigh said. "Kovatch and (Halee) Adams are two of our best shooters as well passers. It is rare to see how unselfish our players are, especially when Katie (Reese) gets double-teamed we have players that can pass and handle the ball."
The Flash started quickly on Wednesday, ripping off a 13-0 run after an early CCU bucket to take control of the game early. Kovatch had seven of her 30 in the run including a pair of three pointers. The Flash never let off the gas after the early run, as Coastal never got within nine points the rest of the ball game. SFU led by as many as 20 in the first quarter as
Halee Adams (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) and
Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) each hit threes to give the Flash a 21-4 advantage. Adams finished with 15 and Wynn 13 as part of the balanced offensive attack. Saint Francis would lead 33-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Coastal Carolina would try to chip away at the lead in the second quarter, but could never get closer than 12 points. Every mini run by the Chanticleers was answered by the Flash all night long.
Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) hit a three and followed up with a steal and dish to Samaiah Bethel to end a CCU run and put the Flash up 50-32. Brock was the fourth Flash in double figures with 16 points to go with four rebounds, four assists and three steals. SFU would lead 50-36 at the half.
Saint Francis started the second half on an 8-0 run, paced by a pair of Kovatch threes, forcing an early CCU timeout. Kovatch continued to pour in the points, getting a pair of run-outs, transition lay-ups off
Brielle Ward (Baltimore, Md./Western (Hampton U)) rebounds. Ward narrowly missed out on a double-double finishing with nine points and nine rebounds.
"I thought we got a great game from our post players tonight," Haigh added. "Brielle (Ward) with the near double-double, Cyd (Smith) had seven boards and three blocks and we got some good minutes out of Courtney (Zezza) and Jill (Falvey). We controlled the rebounds tonight and that just fuels our style."
The Flash took advantage of the foul line on Wednesday, hitting 23 of 32 free throws (72%), SFU hit seven of eight in the third quarter as they out scored CCU 31-17 to lead 81-53 after three quarters.
The fast break was the difference in the ball game tonight as the Flash put up 48 points in transition on Wednesday. SFU also got 16 steals and forced 29 turnovers leading to 33 points. It was a
Katie Reese (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) steal that led to a Kovatch fade-away and put Saint Francis over the century mark for the first time since the 2013-14 season. Reese finished with a team-high six assists.
Ced Gibson had 16 points to lead Coastal Carolina who dropped to 2-1 with the loss. The Red Flash improve to 1-2 and will look to even their record on Saturday when they travel to Buffalo to take on the CanisiusGolden Griffins. Tip time is at 1 p.m. with a broadcast on ESPN 3.
