LORETTO, Pa. - The Saint Francis men's basketball team hits the road for three of its next four games, beginning with a Tuesday night contest at Kent State on Tuesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. because it is the nightcap of a doubleheader with the Kent State women's team. The women play against Minnesota at 6:30 p.m.
Saint Francis protected home court last week with victories over Westminster and American. The Flash scored 103 points against Westminster, the most scored in a game in more than 20 years. Ben Millaud-Meunier (Montreal, Quebec/Vanier) scored a career-high 32 points in the victory. On Saturday night, the Flash followed that up with another strong performance, dispatching American, 68-48.Â
Kent State also enters Tuesday's matchup with a 2-1 record. All three of Kent State's games have been decided by single digits as the Golden Flashes own wins over Youngstown State and Marist sandwiched around a loss at Southern Illinois.Â
NOTES FROM AMERICAN
- With SFU's 20-point victory, the Red Flash has won consecutive games by 20-plus points for the first time since the first two games of the 2006-07 season. Saint Francis opened that season with wins over Lock Haven (94-60) and Saint Bonaventure (76-54).
- Head coach Rob Krimmel earned his first win in four tries against the Eagles.
- Krimmel moved into 10th place on the school's all-time coaching wins list with 33.Â
- Saint Francis held American to just four field goals in the first half.Â
- Josh Nebo (Katy, Texas/Cypress Lakes) recorded his first career double-digit scoring effort with 10 points.Â
- SFU led from its first field goal 21 seconds into the game until the final buzzer.
- Saint Francis used a 23-0 run in the first half to distance itself from the Eagles.Â
FLASH DEFENSE TOPS IN NORTHEAST CONFERENCE
- The Red Flash leads the Northeast Conference with a defensive field goal percentage of 38.2.
- SFU leads the conference allowing the fewest points per game in the conference with 69.0.
- Saint Francis is also leading the league in three-point defense, allowing just 28.1 percent from beyond the arc.Â
- The Flash is also the leading rebounding team in the NEC, averaging 42.3 boards per game.
KRIMMEL INTO 10th PLACE ON WINS LIST
Head coach Rob Krimmel moved into 10th place on the Saint Francis wins list with his 33rd career victory on Saturday over American. Krimmel passed his predecessor, Don Friday, to move into the top-10. Friday coached the Flash from 2008-12 and finished with 32 victories. Krimmel is now nine wins behind Kevin Porter for ninth place. Porter came back to coach the Flash from 1983-87 following an outstanding playing career in Loretto. He had 42 wins in his four years.
ATTAINING NOVEMBER WINS MARK
Saint Francis will look to win three games in November for the second consecutive season with its matchups against Kent State and UMES this week. SFU won three games in November last season for just the second time in program history. The other came in 1997-98. Last year, the Flash defeated Keystone College, Maryland Eastern Shore and Navy.
POSTSEASON SUCCESS
Last season, the Red Flash became the first team in school history to reach the Northeast Conference Tournament semifinals for the second consecutive season. In each of those two seasons, however, the Flash fell to the top-seeded team. Two years ago, SFU lost at Robert Morris, 60-57. Last season, SFU fell to St. Francis Brooklyn, 62-48. Despite the loss, Saint Francis still earned a bid to the CIT. In a first-round game, the Flash hosted Bowling Green. In that contest, the lead changed hands 13 times and the score was tied on eight occasions before the Falcons left Loretto with a 67-64 victory. Â Â
FLASH POINTS
- The Red Flash will face longtime rival Duquesne at the Cambria County War Memorial in Johnstown, Pa., on Dec. 12. The two teams have a long history in that building, including a Red Flash win over the second-ranked Dukes in 1955.Â
- Saint Francis is scheduled to play two games on national television in 2015-16. SFU will face No. 2 Maryland on Big Ten Network on Dec. 4. SFU will also face NEC rival Robert Morris on ESPNU on Feb. 11.
ABOUT KENT STATEÂ Â Â
The Golden Flashes enter Tuesday's game with the Red Flash also at 2-1. Kent State has played three close games so far this season as all have been decided by less than 10 points. Kent State opened the season with a 79-70 victory over Youngstown State. It then lost at Southern Illinois, 72-69, before defeating Marist, 79-72, on Saturday.Â
Kellon Thomas (17 ppg) and Jimmy Hall (16 ppg) are the team's leading scorers. Hall scored 27 points in the team's win over Marist. Hall also averages 8.3 rebounds per game, but that is good for just third on the Kent State roster. Chris Ortiz (8.7 ppg, 9.3 rpg) and Khaliq Spicer (9.3 ppg, 9.0 rpg) are the leaders on the glass for the Golden Flashes.Â
LOOKING AHEAD
The Red Flash travels to Maryland Eastern Shore for an afternoon game on Black Friday before returning home to face Lehigh next Wednesday. Kent State moves into a three-game road trip following the game with Saint Francis. The Golden Flashes play at Pittsburgh on Saturday before playing at Cleveland State and NJIT in early December.Â
SERIES HISTORY
Though the teams have played just nine times, Kent State and Saint Francis have a historical series that dates back to the 1963-64 season. Saint Francis won four of the first six meetings, including two wins during the 1978-79 season. Kent State has won the past three meetings, but the only one to occur since 1986-87 was a 77-48 win for the Golden Flashes in 2012.
