KENT, Ohio – The Saint Francis men's basketball team traveled to Kent State for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday night, and the Golden Flashes defeated the Red Flash, 79-60.
Greg Brown (Odenton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) scored a game-high 21 points in the defeat.
The Golden Flashes (3-1) held an advantage throughout the first half and led by as many as 13 midway through the first, but the Red Flash still found itself down by only six with 3:37 remaining in the first half. SFU had been trailing 25-12 with 8:22 remaining, but Brown led the Flash back to within striking distance. He scored 14 of the Flash's 18 points in the final eight-plus minutes the first half. But for every basket Saint Francis scored in that period, Kent State found a response. Galal Cancer hit two three pointers late in the half to help Kent State to a 39-28 lead at the half.
Brown scored 16 points in the first half, topping his previous season high of 15 at Notre Dame in the season opener. He finished with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including a career-high three three-pointers.
Kent State opened up its lead early in the second half. Less than three minutes in, the Golden Flashes had its lead to 17 points at 50-33. Saint Francis came into the game the early leader in the Northeast Conference in both rebounding and defensive field goal percentage, and the Red Flash held its own on the boards. Kent State outrebounded the Flash by just three, 40-37. But Kent State used a 44-20 advantage on points in the paint to shoot 45.7 percent from the floor, a new season-high against Saint Francis. Notre Dame shot 42.6 percent.
Josh Nebo (Katy, Texas/Cypress Lakes) set a new season/career high with 11 points, including seven makes at the free throw line.
Malik Harmon (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) scored five points and tied his career high with six rebounds.
Ronnie Drinnon (Jamestown, Ohio/Greenview) had nine points and six rebounds.
Ben Millaud-Meunier (Montreal, Quebec/Vanier),
Georgios Angelou (Halkida, Greece/Lykeio Kanithou) and
Isaiah Blackmon (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte) each had four rebounds.
Jimmy Hall led Kent State with 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
Saint Francis returns to action on Friday at Maryland Eastern Shore at 4 p.m.
