LIVE AUDIO (WWGE)HUNTINGTON, W. VA.- Saint Francis is back on the road this weekend, starting a five-day, three-game, two-state road trip with the Marshall Thundering Herd with a noon tip-off on Thursday at the Cam Henderson Center.
The game can be heard on the Saint Francis flagship station 1400 WWGE and its online stream with Curt Lowe on the call. Live video and live stats are also being provided courtesy of the Marshall athletic department.
LAST TIME OUTThe Red Flash come into the contest at 2-6, fresh off a 82-78 comeback victory over the Pitt-Johnstown Mountain Cats on Saturday afternoon at the Cambria County War Memorial.
Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) continued her dominant start to the season, matching her career high with 32 in the win. She was named the Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie of the Week for the fourth-straight week for her efforts. Cydney smith nearly had a triple-double, going for 10 points, nine rebounds and a career-high seven blocks.
ABOUT THE FLASHSaint Francis will be looking for its first victory outside of the Keystone State. SFU is 0-5 in true road games, 1-1 at DeGol Arena and 1-0 at the War Memorial. The team has been close to its first road win on several occasions, falling by seven at Cincinnati to start the year, by six at Cornell and by four at Columbia. The Red Flash will look to build off Saturday's victory where they held Pitt-Johnstown scoreless over the game's final 4:48. SFU held UPJ to just 30 percent shooting in the second half and 0-10 from beyond the arc. They also forced 20 turnovers in the victory.
Brielle Ward (Baltimore, Md./Western (Hampton U)) had a SFU-career-high 12 rebounds while the aforementioned Smith was strong on the low post as well. They will look to slow down Marhsall's Leah Scott who went for 24 points in Marshall's 66-60 loss to West Virginia their last time out.
ABOUT THE HERDMarshall enters Thursday's game at 6-1, dropping their lone game this season last weekend to West Virginia in the "Capital Classic". The Herd are led by Leah Scott who is averaging 18 points and eight rebounds per contest. She is closing in on 1000 points in her career, totaling 941 so far in her career. Freshman Shayna Gore is off to a hot start to her career, averaging 15 points per game. She burst onto the scene with 27 points in Marshall's 104-101 win at Morehead State to start the season. The Herd feature a balanced attack with Talequia Hamilton and Taylor Porter each averaging just under 10 points per game to go with Scott and Gore, as a team the balanced offense is scoring 78 points per game. Marshall also sports a stingy defense, allowing just 58 points per game. After the 101 point outburst by the Eagles to start the season, only West Virginia has scored more than 65 and four teams have been held to 50 or fewer. The Red Flash are also looking to hand Marshall its first loss at the Cam Henderson Center. The Herd is 5-0 at home with wins over: Brescia (Ky), Rhode Island, NJIT, Cornell, and Alabama A&M and Marshall has won 10 straight at home dating back to last season.
ABOUT THE MATCHUPThese two teams are meeting for the first time since December 20, 1993. Only six players between the two teams were alive at that time. Marshall has won all four of the previous meetings including a 95-78 win in Loretto in 1993. The last time the teams met in Huntington was December 21, 1992, a 60-42 Marshall victory. Look for both teams to try to force turnovers, each team is forcing more than they give up so far on the season. SFU is turning it over 18 times per game while forcing 21 while Marshall averages 15 turnovers while forcing 18. Both teams are averaging nearly 10 steals per game. SFU is 2-4 when winning the turnover battle and 0-2 when losing it.
LOOKING AHEADFollowing Thursday's game, the Flash will fly down to Florida to take part in the Gator Holiday Classic. The Red Flash will face Florida on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. before taking on either Eastern Kentucky or NC State on Monday at noon.
