GAINESVILLE, FLA-Â Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) had 23 points to lead all scorers and
Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) added 19 but Florida shot 53 percent including 74 points in the paint in a 122-65 victory over the Red Flash in game two of the 2015 Gator Holiday Classic at the O'Connell Center.
Florida got off to a hot start, running out to a 30-2 lead and never looking back.
"I thought we got rattled a little bit there early," coach
Joe Haigh said. "I wish we could have gotten some early shots to fall, because I thought we played well once we settled down."
Kovatch got the offense going with eight-straight points as the Flash responded with an 8-2 run to close the quarter, Florida led 34-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Florida's pressure fueled their offense all game long, the Gators recorded 21 steals and 40 turnovers that led to 50 points. The Flash continued to play their style and forced 25 turnovers of their own including 12 steals, three by
Samiah Bethel (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy).
"Florida's length and size are something that we can't replicate," Haigh said. "There were a number of times where we make the right pass or make the right read and they are just bigger than us. But this is a good atmosphere, it is a loud, playoff-like atmosphere that made us work on our communication."
Saint Francis continued to attack throughout the game as their simlar style wore on the Gators. Brock hit a pair of threes late in the second to get her confidence going. She would add another 10 points in the third en route to 19 points. Her outburst helped the Flash play right with the Gators in the third.
"I loved the intensity and the defense in the third, we responded well out of the half," Haigh said. "I wanted a few more shots to fall and more than the 14 points, but that was the story all game long, we had shots and they didn't fall."
The Red Flash shot just 28 percent for the game, but it was the defense that held Florida to just 18 in the third quarter. SFU also hit the glass hard, grabbing 22 offensive rebounds to just 20 for Florida and 17-12 edge in second-chance points.
Brielle Ward (Baltimore, Md./Western (Hampton U)) and
Cydney Smith (Port Tobacco, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) each grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Flash.
The loss drops Saint Francis to 2-8 on the season. They will have a quick turnaround as Eastern Kentucky awaits on Monday in the Gator Holiday Classic third-place game. Tip time from the O'Connell Center is set for noon.
