Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Barry Beal

No. 2 Maryland Downs Red Flash, 96-55

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Saint Francis men's basketball team ran into one of the top teams in college basketball on Friday night, and the No. 2 Maryland Terrapins flexed their collective muscles in dispatching the Red Flash, 96-55, on Friday night at Xfinity Center. Ronnie Drinnon (Jamestown, Ohio/Greenview) recorded his second double-double and Ben Millaud-Meunier (Montreal, Quebec/Vanier) led SFU with 13 points.

The Terrapins (7-1) scored the game's first nine points and 16 of the first 19 in the first seven minutes of play, interrupted only by a Millaud-Meunier three pointer with 17:38 left in the half. The Flash (3-4) was never able to cut the Maryland lead to single digits, but Saint Francis showed glimpses throughout the night that it could play with a national title contender.

The Red Flash led in rebounding until the final minute of the game as Maryland ended with a 34-31 advantage on the boards. Drinnon led the way with 10 rebounds to go with his 11 points. That's his second double-double after getting his first of the season at UMES last week. The Flash used that strong rebounding performance to top Maryland in second-chance points, 18-7.

The Flash trailed at the half, 45-24, but came out ready to battle in the second half. Drinnon and Greg Brown (Odenton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) hit jumpers to open the second half to cut the lead back to 17. Brown fought early foul trouble but still finished with eight points and four rebounds. He also had an impressive block at the rim on Jared Nickens early in the first half.

SFU played even with Maryland for the first 11-plus minutes of the second half as Patrick Wrencher (West Chester, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller), Georgios Angelou (Halkida, Greece/Lykeio Kanithou), Isaiah Blackmon (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte) and Basil Thompson (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) provided solid minutes off the bench in that stretch. Blackmon and Angelou had five points apiece, while Wrencher and Thompson each scored four.

Malik Harmon (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) finished with five points, four assists and three rebounds. Maryland became the first team to top 90 points on the Flash since LIU Brooklyn in Jan. 2012.

Maryland's Robert Carter led all scorers with 20 points. Jake Layman and Diamond Stone each scored 16.

Saint Francis pauses its schedule for finals next week before returning to action on Saturday, Dec. 12, against Duquesne at the Cambria County War Memorial in Johnstown.
