Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Dan Griffin

Balanced Effort Falls Short for Women's Basketball At Ohio

ATHENS, OHIO- Halee Adams (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) led a balanced Saint Francis offense with 13 points and SFU showed at time that they could run with the defending Mid-American Conference champion Ohio Bobcats in a 91-65 loss on Sunday afternoon.

The loss drops Saint Francis to 1-6 on the season and the Bobcats run their record to 5-2.

The balanced SFU effort again was headlined by Adams with 13 as she was joined in double figures by Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) with 12. Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) was held to a season-low eight points as she battled foul trouble all game long before fouling out in the fourth. Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy), Cydney Smith (Port Tobacco, Md./St. Mary's Ryken), and Courtney Zezza (Plum, Pa./Plum) each had eight points. Queira Lampkins led four Bobcats in double figures with 21 points.

"Ohio is a great team, we knew that going in, a tournament team from a season ago who brought nearly everyone back," coach Joe Haigh said. "It was a tougher day than I would have liked and would have thought. I give Ohio a lot of credit, they made it tough for us offensively, a lot of our players had tough shooting days and that is something that we have to fight through."

The Red Flash held Ohio in check over the first few minutes of the first quarter. Kovatch hit a pair of threes as Ohio missed four of their first five shots as they grabbed a 10-6 lead after a three-point play from Cydney Smith (Port Tobacco, Md./St. Mary's Ryken). Ohio responded with a 10-0 run to lead 16-10 before a Katie Reese (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) lay-up ended the run. The Bobcats would lead 22-16 after the end of the first quarter.

Saint Francis scored the first two baskets of the second quarter to cut the Ohio lead to two at 22-20 after a Wynn lay-up. Again, the Bobcats responded with an 8-0 spurt to lead by double digits at 30-20. The Flash responded with two quick Brock buckets to get back within six, but would get no closer in the half. Ohio closed on a 9-2 run to lead 39-26 at the half.

SFU was held to a long Wynn jumper in the first four minutes of the third as Ohio extended the lead to 20. Wynn would heat up in the final minutes of the third quarter as she hit a pair of threes and Brock and Zezza each hit jumpers to close out the quarter as the Bobcats led 63-40 after three quarters.

In the fourth, the Red Flash continued to fight against the Cats. Adams converted a pair of three-point plays to help pace the offense before finishing with a team-high 13.

"I really liked the way we fought today," Haigh added. "It didn't go our way today but I think we can look at the film and take a lot away from this game. I liked how we played through the physicality of the game at times, but that is something we will get better at going forward."

The Red Flash forced 14 turnovers (against 17 miscues) as Adams and Brock each had three steals. Cydney Smith (Port Tobacco, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) added three blocks to go with five rebounds to tie Brielle Ward (Baltimore, Md./Western (Hampton U)) for the team high.

Saint Francis will break for finals this week before taking on the Mountain Cats of Pitt-Johnstown at the Cambria County War Memorial next Saturday. Tip time is set for 3:30 p.m..
