BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N. Y. (Feb. 21, 2015) – The Saint Francis U women's basketball team had its two game winning streak snapped at the hands of St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday as it fell, 71-55, on the road.
It was almost an identical score to the first meeting that SFBK took in Loretto, 70-55. The three-pointers were the story for the Terriers as they netted 10 of them throughout the contest. Saint Francis dominated the painted area and led 38-22 in the category, but could not make up the difference from beyond the arc.
Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) led the way for SFU with 17 points to go along with six rebounds, while
Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) added 14 points and seven boards. They were the lone two scorers in double-figures for the Flash.
Both teams struggled to score early in the first half as St. Francis Brooklyn held a 2-0 lead for the first three and a half minutes. The Terriers then followed with an 8-0 run as the three's starting falling for them and led 10-2 forcing the first SFU timeout.
Shaqeia Stokes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) ended the scoring drought for Saint Francis U at the 12:04 mark of half one after a pass inside from
Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh). The triples continued to fall for the Terriers as they notched six in the opening frame and their biggest lead of the half was 15. Saint Francis went into the halftime break down, 32-20, it was its lowest scoring output in a half this season.
St. Francis Brooklyn came out of the locker room on a roll again and started the second period on a 7-0 run, which forced a Flash timeout. SFU got a flash of brilliance as Hayward made a nifty up and under lay-in while getting fouled, she would convert the free throw at the 15:44 mark, but SFU trailed by 16.
It was Brock who also connected on a tough lay-up after a spin move two minutes later as the Flash continued to try to get some momentum. SFU held the Terriers at 56 points for nearly three minutes, but they couldn't narrow the gap to single digits. SFBK kept its large advantage for the remainder of the contest.
Hope Phillips (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) scored a career-high nine points, all of which came in the first half of play. Stokes finished with seven points, while Wynn had six off two triples.
Cydney Smith (Port Tobacco, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) added five rebounds in the start. Jaymee Veney scored a career-high 25 points for the Terriers to go along with 14 rebounds.
Saint Francis will travel to New Britain to face Central Connecticut (15-10, 11-3 NEC) on Monday for the second time in exactly a week. SFU bested the Blue Devils in Loretto last Monday, 61-48. The defensive effort for the Red Flash was the best they've had all season.
