LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis men's basketball team clinched its first winning regular season in 10 years with its 63-60 victory over Mount St. Mary's on Thursday night at DeGol Arena.
Â
Getting to that 15th win for the Flash had a great start and what turned into another exciting finish at DeGol Arena this season. Saint Francis (15-13, 9-8) used a 13-0 run early in the first half to take a double-digit lead on The Mount. Five different SFU players scored on the run as
Ben Millaud-Meunier (Montreal, Quebec/Vanier) and
Malik Harmon (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) each hit three pointers and
Basil Thompson (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) converted a three-point play. Harmon's three pointer with 10:06 to play capped the streak with the Flash ahead, 19-7.
Â
Stephon Whyatt (Jersey City, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) kept the Flash lead in double digits later in the half. He scored six straight points, ignited by a sky-walking dunk on the break to make it 24-12 with 7:43 to play.
Â
The Mount (14-14, 10-7) clawed back into the game before halftime, however. After Whyatt's free throw made it 28-18 with 5:50 remaining, The Mount scored eight of the final 10 points of the half to make it 30-26 at the break. That spurt managed to push the Mountaineers over the 30 percent barrier from the field in the half. They came into the game shooting more than 40 percent.
Â
The Mount never led in the second half, but the game remained in doubt until the end. Millaud-Meunier hit another three pointer to give the Flash a seven-point lead midway through the half, but Andrew Smeathers answered with one for The Mount to cut the lead back to four. Millaud-Meunier had 10 points.
Â
The Mount scored six straight points to cut the deficit to a single point, 55-54, with 2:25 to play. It also had the ball, but a wild layup attempt by Junior Robinson put the ball back in SFU's hands.
Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) nailed a three pointer to put the lead back at two possessions, 58-54. Robinson came back with a layup with less than a minute remaining, and Ashe split a pair of free throws with 35 seconds left to make it 58-57 Flash.
Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) had a game-high 16 points while adding six rebounds and three blocks.
Â
Greg Brown (Odenton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) made four free throws in the final stretch to keep the Flash ahead, including a pair after a Will Miller three pointer had cut the deficit to one. Ahead by three, the Flash opted to foul before The Mount could get a shot off. Robinson missed the front end of the one-and-one, but the Flash missed both times at the line with less than two seconds left.
Greg Brown (Odenton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) finished with 11 points and five boards.
Â
The Mount grabbed the rebound and called timeout with just 1.1 seconds left. A 75-foot heave was well wide, and that gave the Flash its first winning regular season since the 2004-05 season. The Flash was 15-13 that season. The Flash also finished with 10 home wins, the most for the team since that 04-05 campaign when it had 11.
Â
Ronnie Drinnon (Jamestown, Ohio/Greenview) tied his career high with six assists. The Flash had 16 assists on 19 field goals.
Â
Saint Francis closes the regular season with a trip to Robert Morris on Saturday afternoon. The game is slated for a 4 p.m. start, just after the Red Flash women battle the Colonials at 1 p.m.
