MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (Feb. 28, 2015) – The Saint Francis U women's basketball team played an even first half, but fell on the road, 71-60, to Robert Morris on Saturday afternoon in the final weekend of the regular season.
The Red Flash will now require help from Wagner to beat Mount St. Mary's to give SFU a chance to win on Monday at home against The Mount and then sneak into the Northeast Conference Tournament.
Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) led all scorers with 24 points and seven rebounds, while
Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) had 14 points, nine rebounds, and four steals.
Samiah Bethel (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) had a season-high 10 points with a career-high seven rebounds.
Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) started the scoring two minutes in for SFU as the freshman buried a triple that was nothing but net. Hayward hit a 3-pointer before Robert Morris went on a 6-0 run and took an 11-6 lead at the 14:37 mark.
The Colonials continued to hold a lead, one that extended to as much as eight until the Red Flash started to battle back. An 8-0 run ignited by important free throws from Brock and Hayward gave the Flash a 22-21 advantage with less than six minutes to go.
Both teams traded points and RMU held a 30-28 lead with 10 seconds remaining and the Flash had a play ready to find Hayward an open shot, which she banked in as time in the opening period expired. Hayward led all scorers at the break with 17 points.
Each team shot plenty and well from the free throw line as SFU went 11-of-14 and RMU went 12-of-16. However, the Flash went just 8-of-30 from the field, while the Colonials matched them at 8-of-31. There were three tied scores and seven lead changes in half one.
Robert Morris started the second half on a 12-6 run, followed by a 13-6 run by the Red Flash capped off by a Wynn triple. That basket gave SFU a 49-48 lead with 11:42 to play. Once RMU regained the lead on the next basket they never gave it back up.
Lou Mataly hit a triple for the Colonials at the 4:14 mark, which proved to be the dagger against SFU. The Colonials had been 3-of-23 from beyond the arc prior to that shot. Saint Francis on the other hand was shooting 50% (9-of-18) from downtown, which kept them in the ball game, and it finished the game at 42% (10-of-24).
Brock hit three triples in the second half and each time SFU was in desperate need of a basket. Wynn finished with eight points and three boards.
Saint Francis could have an important 'win-and-get-in' scenario on Monday evening when it hosts Mount St. Mary's at 7 p.m. in the regular season finale. Wagner and Mount St. Mary's play at 4:30, those results could end SFU's playoff hopes.
