BROOKLYN – Despite making 11 three pointers and taking a 15-point lead in the first half, the Saint Francis men's basketball team fell to LIU Brooklyn, 66-60, Saturday afternoon in NEC action. The Flash was in search of its first four-game winning streak since Jan. 2011.
Things looked bright for the Flash (13-10, 7-5) from the start. After LIU Brooklyn scored the first two points, the Flash rattled off the next 12. The run was bookended by three pointers from
Dominique Major (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) three minutes apart. In the middle,
Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) had two layups and
Malik Harmon (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) had one.
The Red Flash lead pushed to as big as 15 in the first half with 6:01 remaining on back-to-back three pointers by
Ollie Jackson (Dallas, Texas/Pinkston ) and
Ben Millaud-Meunier (Montreal, Quebec/Vanier). The Flash went 7-for-19 from downtown in the first half, one more make than the Flash had in each of its previous two games. Major had three of the makes in the first. His shot just before the buzzer gave the Flash a 37-25 lead into the intermission. He added a fourth make in the second half and finished with 12 points.
Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter), the NEC's leader in field goal percentage, went 4-for-6 in the first half, punctuated by a thunderous dunk that caused the light around the backboard to light up temporarily.
LIU Brooklyn (10-13, 6-6) made its push in the second half. The Blackbirds outscored the Flash, 22-10, in the first 10-plus minutes to tie the score at 47 on a Gerell Martin three pointer with 9:46 remaining. But Millaud-Meunier came back with a three of his own on the next possession. He finished with nine points and five rebounds. Â
The Blackbirds pulled ahead for the first time since it was 2-0 on a Nura Zanna layup to make it 53-52 with 5:13 to play. The lead traded back to the Flash one more time.
Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) hit two free throws and Harmon hit one to make it 55-53 with 3:31 left. The Blackbirds outscored the Flash, however, 16-5 from that point on to win the game. That included back-to-back three pointers to turn the two-point deficit into a four-point lead that it wouldn't relinquish.
Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) had his third straight double-double, finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Ronnie Drinnon (Jamestown, Ohio/Greenview) came off the bench in his first game back to score eight points on 4-of-5 shooting.
Greg Brown (Odenton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had seven points, including going 4-for-4 from the free throw line. The Flash's 11 made three pointers are the team's most since making 13 against Wagner in the NEC opener in early January.
Saint Francis returns home Thursday night to face Central Connecticut at 7:00 p.m.
