PITTSBURGH – Saint Francis women's soccer goalkeeper
Romina Kunze (Frankfurt, Germany/Carl-von-Weinberg-Schule) made 12 saves, but the Red Flash dropped its final game at the Steel City Classic, 3-0, to host Duquesne.
Just two days after making 26 saves in a tie with Pittsburgh, Kunze kept the Flash in the game with eight first-half saves. Duquesne struck first in the 25
th minute on a header by Kristen Kotsopoulos. That was the only score in the first half.
The Red Flash finished the match with five shots with four on goal. On each occasion, however, Duquesne keeper Kyra Murphy turned SFU away.
Kelly Beegle (Bedford, Pa./Bedford),
Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac),
Allison LaDuke (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) and
Kimberly Boyd (Windber, Pa./Forest Hills) each registered a shot on goal for the Flash.
LaDuke looked to have a chance to tie the score in the 75
th minute as she went past three Dukes defenders, but the Flash was called offside on the play. Duquesne added insurance goals in the 79
th minute from Abby Losco, and Kotsopoulos scored her second goal of the game in the 87
th minute.
Kunze and LaDuke were each selected to the Steel City Classic All-Tournament Team.
The Red Flash continues its season-opening road trip with a weekend in Chicago, starting with a match at Loyola on Friday.
