CHICAGO – A quick three-goal spurt in less than four minutes in the first half propelled No. 19 DePaul past the Saint Francis women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon. The game was part of the Loyola Invitational.
DePaul took a 1-0 lead in the 27
th minute on a penalty kick after a collision at the top of the box led to a foul call on the Red Flash. Elise Wyatt took the PK for DePaul, and her low shot to the left beat
Romina Kunze (Frankfurt, Germany/Carl-von-Weinberg-Schule). Three minutes later, DePaul made it 2-0 on a goal by Franny Cerny. And less than a minute following that goal, Abby Reed took a pass from Cerny and beat Kunze to the far post to make it 3-0.
The score stayed that way until midway through the second half thanks to a couple of sparkling saves from Kunze. Five minutes into the second half, she made a great sliding stop on Wyatt after she slipped behind the Red Flash defense. Kunze managed to cut down the angle to make the save. With 31 minutes to play, a DePaul free kick from just above the 18-yard box made it over the SFU wall and was on line, but Kunze leaped to punch the ball over the crossbar.
The Flash's top offensive chance came on
Allison LaDuke (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe)'s run down the right side. Her centering feed for a streaking
Shannon McGinnis (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) was just off the mark as the Blue Demons dodged a bullet.
With just under 20 minutes remaining,
Casey Gallaher (Sidman, Pa./Forest Hills) helped the team's cause with a save on a shot to keep the score 3-0. But soon after, DePaul added a goal off of a rebound and another off of a corner kick to round out the scoring, 5-0.
Saint Francis players
Kelly Beegle (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) and
Brittany Hasson (Leola, Pa./Warwick) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Red Flash opens the home portion of its schedule Friday afternoon against Loyola (Md.).
