Navy Tops Women's Soccer

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The United States Naval Academy used a four-goal second half to defeat the Saint Francis women's soccer team, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.

The teams played a scoreless first half, but the Flash had four shots in the opening 45 minutes. Casey Gallaher (Sidman, Pa./Forest Hills) had a shot blocked in the 18th minute, and Sara Suler (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) missed wide in the 26th minute. Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac) had two shots in just over a minute later in the half. Her first attempt was saved by Navy keeper Dayton Wetherby, and her second shot was wide. Saint Francis goalkeeper Romina Kunze (Frankfurt, Germany/Carl-von-Weinberg-Schule) made five of her eight saves in the first half to keep things scoreless.

Clare MacAdam got the Midshipmen on the board in the 49th minute. She scored on a header off a corner kick to make it 1-0. With the score still 1-0 in the 60th minute, Brittany Hasson (Leola, Pa./Warwick) had an opportunity that was turned aside by new keeper Taygan Grundy. That chance led to a Flash corner kick, but nothing came of it. It stayed 1-0 until the 71st minute, when Madeline Ostrowski scored the first of her two goals on the day. Those two were sandwiched around a penalty kick goal in the 83rd minute for Navy.

Gallaher led the Red Flash with three shots.

SFU takes a break before starting Northeast Conference action on Oct. 2 at LIU Brooklyn. That will be the first of eight NEC games.
