BROOKLYN, N.Y.- Saint Francis women's basketball will try to sweep through Brooklyn on Monday night as they take on the St. Francis-Brooklyn Terriers at 7p.m. in the Pope Family Athletic Center.
ABOUT THE RED FLASHÂ Saint Francis is coming off an impressive and near wire-to-wire 84-75 victory at LIU Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon.
Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) had 30 points to lead all scorers, but it was the defense that played a huge role in the victory. SFU forced 27 turnovers, turning them into 31 points in Saturday's victory.
Samiah Bethel (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) had four of the team's 15 steals and helped lead the defensive attack. The Red Flash led by as many as 17 in the second half and withstood a furious Blackbird rally in the fourth quarter. Kovatch's 30-point effort was the fifth time she has topped that mark this season and raised her season average to 22.9 points per game. That mark is second in the NEC, ninth in the nation and tops in the NCAA amongst freshman. As a team, Saturday's effort has the Flash atop the NEC in numerous categories including: assists per game (15.9), steals per game (10.9), turnover margin (+1.31) and turnovers forced (22.2).
ABOUT THE TERRIERSSt, Francis comes into the contest still in search of their first NEC win of the season. SFC fell to Robert Morris on Saturday 62-53 and is 3-11 overall on the season. Much like LIU, the Terriers like to slow the pace, averaging 54 points per game while surrendering 65. Senior Leah Fechko is their do-everything guard, leading the team in points (14), rebounds (8.3) and assists (3.6) while logging an impressive 38 minutes a night. A two-time Northeast Conference All-Defensive team guard, she averaged 13 points and 12 rebounds against the Flash last season in a pair of SFC victories. Freshman Maria Palarino is second on the team in scoring at eight points per game. Once again, the Flash will try to speed up an opponent and turn them over, the Terriers average 18 turnovers per contest through 14 games this season.
ABOUT THE MATCHUPTHis is the 57th time the two schools will meet with Saint Francis University owning a 39-17 all-time advantage. However, the Terriers have won the last four meetings, sweeping the season series each of the last two years. Coach Haigh is 2-4 all time against St. Francis Brooklyn with the last win coming in 2013, a 64-53 triumph in Brooklyn.
