LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis men's basketball team traded blows with Mount St. Mary's for the better part of Saturday afternoon's game at DeGol Arena, but a 9-0 Mountaineer run in the second half broke open a close game. Mount St. Mary's won, 82-72.
Ben Millaud-Meunier (Montreal, Quebec/Vanier) led the Flash with 19 points.
Ronnie Drinnon (Jamestown, Ohio/Greenview) recorded his fifth-straight double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Greg Brown (Odenton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had a season-high six assists.
Drinnon scored the first seven points of the second half for Saint Francis (7-10, 3-3), and his three pointer to cap that personal run pulled the Flash to within five, 42-37, with 15:55 remaining. That started a 9-0 run for the Red Flash as
Malik Harmon (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) and Millaud-Meunier followed with three pointers on consecutive possessions to give the Flash a 43-42 lead. Saint Francis turned an eight-point deficit into a one-point lead in less than 90 seconds.
Mount St. Mary's (8-11, 5-1) restored a four-point advantage on Gregory Graves' three pointer with 10:16 left to make it 53-49. Millaud-Meunier responded two possessions later with a three pointer just as the shot clock expired. Brown followed with a free throw to tie the score at 53 with 8:39 to play.
After a Flash turnover on its next possession, The Mount began its run. Will Miller made a three pointer and converted a free throw for a four-point play. After an SFU miss, Miller again hit from downtown to make it 60-53. A jumper from Graves after a steal pushed the lead to 62-53 on the strength of a 9-0 run in the span of just 58 seconds.
Basil Thompson (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) made two free throws on the Flash's next trip to cut the lead back to seven, but that would be the slimmest margin for the rest of the afternoon.
It was a strong offensive performance from both teams. Mount St. Mary's shot 59.6 percent from the floor and 62.5 percent (10-for-16) from three-point range. SFU was 52.1 percent from the floor and shot 52.6 percent (10-for-19) from three-point range. It's the first time this season that both teams shot better than 50 percent from the field and the third time that both teams each made at least 10 three pointers.
Drinnon's 11 rebounds give him 658 career rebounds, enough to move him into 18th place on the school's all-time list. He's just seven rebounds behind Charlie Kates (1977-81) and eight behind Joe Anderson (1987-91) on the rebounding list. The Flash outrebounded its fifth consecutive opponent, holding Mount St. Mary's to 21 rebounds. That's the fewest total rebounds for an opponent this season.
Saint Francis will hit the road next weekend looking to get back on the winning track. First up is a date at Bryant on Thursday night.
