LORETTO, PA- Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) led four players in double figures with 22 points and Saint Francis hit 13 three-pointers in an 87-57 victory over Mount Saint Mary's on Saturday afternoon in DeGol Arena.
The Red Flash moved to 4-1 in Northeast Conference play with the victory for the first time since the 2012-13 season.
"Really liked the effort today, especially defensively," Coach
Joe Haigh said after the game. "Our close outs were really good, we didn't give them a lot of good looks at the basket and that helped create turnovers and our transition offense."
Saint Francis held the Mountaineers to just 38 percent shooting overall, 28 percent in the first half and a meager eight percent from three-point range.
SFU answered a 9-0 Mount Saint Mary's run in the first quarter with a 9-2 run of their own and never looked back.
Courtney Zezza (Plum, Pa./Plum) had five of her career-high 12 points in the run to lead the Flash, who took a 21-13 lead into the second quarter.
The Flash turned it on in the second quarter. The Flash got six quick points on threes by
Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) and Kovatch and built on their first-quarter run. SFU used a 12-0 run that spanned the quarter to build a 27-13 lead and the Mount would never get closer.
It was the defense that fueled the Flash in the quarter, they limited the Mountaineers to just seven second-quarter points including just two in the final five minutes. SFU turned 15 Mountaineer turnovers into 20 points in the opening half and closed the quarter on another 12-0 run to lead 45-20 at the intermission.
Mount Saint Mary's tried to get something going in the third quarter, scoring two quick buckets and forcing a pair of Flash turnovers. The SFU defense once again forced the Mountaineers into tough shots and surrendered only four points over the next four minutes. Threes by
Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) and Kovatch got the offense going in the second half and SFU built slightly on the lead as another Brock jumper beat the third quarter buzzer with Saint Francis leading 63-36.
Saint Francis continued to pour it on in the fourth, leading by as many as 36 points. Twelve different players scored for the Flash, with Kovatch being joined in double figures by Zezza, Wynn and
Katie Reese (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) who all had 12 points. Wynn also added a game-high six assists for the Flash, who helped on 19 of the 29 baskets on Saturday.
"I thought we did a great job attacking the offensive glass, especially in the second half," Haigh added. "Brielle (Ward) had five big offensive boards today, I think that helped us keep control of the game."
Ward totaled a game-high 10 rebounds as Saint Francis out rebounded Mount Saint Mary's 40-36 including 14-12 on the offensive glass. That gave SFU a 16-14 edge in second-chance points. For the game, the Flash forced 26 turnovers leading to 33 points, while giving it away 20 times but holding the Mountaineers to just 17 points off the miscues. Kovatch and Brock each had three steals to lead the team, the Flash tallied16 thefts for the game.
The victory moves Saint Francis to 6-10 overall and 4-1 in Northeast Conference play while the Mountaineers fall to 4-12 overall and 2-3 in the NEC. The victory also give the Flash their third-straight victory and their fifth win in their last six contests, including the exhibition against West Virginia State.
