Men's Volleyball Rallies to Beat Ball State

LORETTO, Pa. - After falling behind two games to one, the Saint Francis men's volleyball team came back to defeat the Ball State Cardinals, 3-2, on Sunday night at DeGol Arena. The Flash won the match, 25-21, 23-25, 21-25, 25-22, 15-13.

The Red Flash improves to 3-3 on the season, while the Cardinals drop to 3-3.  

"It was a battle and our guys kept fighting and fighting. It was impressive to see us fight back from two sets to one. Our fan support was great again. The Rascals were tremendous again tonight," said head coach Mike Rumbaugh.

Stephen Braswell (Manchester, Pa./Northeastern) led the Flash with 19 kills and finished with 20.5 points, while Mike Marshman (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) added 13 kills and finished with a .500 hitting percentage. Daniel Ford (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) had a game-high 54 assists, while Keith Kegerreis (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) finished with six total blocks.

In the fifth and deciding game, the Flash led 7-5. The two teams would go on to tie the score at 11-11, and then again at 12-12. A Braswell kill gave SFU the game and set, 15-13. The Flash hit .647 as a team in the final set.

After exchanging points early in the first set, the Flash jumped out to a 10-7 lead. After a Ball State timeout, the Cardinals went on a 3-0 to cut the led to one at 11-10. After kills by Brandon Buck (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) and Jeff Hogan (Northern Cambria, Pa./Northern Cambria), Saint Francis went ahead, 17-15. A Braswell kill gave the Flash a 25-21 win.

The Cardinals took a 9-8 lead in the second set, but the Flash stormed back to score four unanswered points to gain an 11-9 advantage. BSU would tie it at 13-13, but the Flash retook the lead at 15-13 on a Cardinal attack error. Ball State went on a 3-0 run to lead 22-21. A kill by Alex Pia gave BSU the second set, 25-23.

Ball State opened the third set with a 3-1 advantage. The Flash would use a 4-0 run to lead 11-9. A service ace by Ball State's Jack Lesure broke the 14-14 tie, and gave the Cardinals a 15-14 led. The Flash used a 3-0 run to pull ahead, 18-17, but BSU answere with a  6-1 spurt to led, 24-19. The Flash kept close at 24-21, but an attack error by the Flash gave BSU the 25-21 win.

Saint Francis never trailed in the fourth set, as the Flash controlled the early going, 10-6. The Cardinals closed within one a 14-13, but a Hogan kill gave SFU a two-point lead. A Shaughn McDonald (Coraopolis, Pa./Our Lady of Sacred Heart) ace extended the Flash led to 21-18, forcing a BSU timeout. An attack error by Ball State sealed the Saint Francis victory, 25-22.

The Flash return home on Friday as they host Penn State at 7 p.m.
