LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis men's basketball team used a 20-7 stretch in the second half to hold off Sacred Heart, 84-80, on Monday night at DeGol Arena.
Ben Millaud-Meunier (Montreal, Quebec/Vanier) led five Red Flash scorers in double figures with 24 points. He went 5-for-8 from three-point range and made four triples in the second half. He also had five assists. In the second half, Millaud-Meunier hit three of those three pointers in a matter of 93 seconds to turn a 38-35 deficit to a 44-38 Red Flash lead.
Sophomore
Basil Thompson (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) was also a catalyst for the Flash's extended run that began with SFU ahead by just a point, 51-50, with 11:11 left in regulation. Thompson scored six of the Flash's first eight points in the run, and his tip slam with 8:29 left off a
Josh Nebo (Katy, Texas/Cypress Lakes) miss gave the Flash a 59-53 lead. That lead quickly jumped to double digits when
Greg Brown (Odenton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) found Millaud-Meunier for a three in transition, and Millaud-Meunier returned the favor with a feed to Brown for three to make it 65-55 with 7:15 remaining.
Thompson, Brown and Nebo finished the stretch with three straight buckets to push the lead to 71-57 with 5:12 to play. Thompson scored 14 points for the second consecutive game, just one shy of matching his career high in scoring. Brown scored 19 points, grabbed five rebounds and added four assists.
After
Ronnie Drinnon (Jamestown, Ohio/Greenview)'s layup with 4:12 left again gave the Flash a 14-point lead, Sacred Heart fought back to cut the deficit to six with 37 seconds left on Quincy McKnight's layup. After a Brown foul shot, McKnight followed with a three pointer to trim the Flash's lead to 79-75.
Isaiah Blackmon (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte) hit two free throws to push the lead back to six, but Cane Broome hit a three to make it a one-possession game, 81-78, with 14 seconds to play. Blackmon had 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. He also recorded his first collegiate block.
Brown made one his two free throws to make it a two-possession game, but Broome again scored to cut the lead to 82-80. Sacred Heart fouled Millaud-Meunier, the top free throw shooter in the Northeast Conference. He calmly sank both with four seconds left to seal the win for the Red Flash.
Drinnon finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, his fourth double-double of the season.
Saint Francis is now 2-0 in NEC play for the second consecutive season, a program first. The Red Flash will look to go 3-0 in NEC play for the first time since the 2002-03 season when SFU heads to St. Francis Brooklyn on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
