Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Dan Griffin

Pioneers Push Past Women's Basketball Late, 81-77

LORETTO, PA- Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) led three players in double figures but a big second-half surge by Sacred Heart was too much to overcome in a 81-77 setback on Monday night at DeGol Arena.

Brock's 21 was aided by Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh)'s 16 points and Katie Reese (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes)'s 15 point efforts. Halee Adams (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) had eight points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Flash who were out rebounded 46-30 on Monday night. The Red Flash countered the Pioneer's rebounding edge by forcing 24 turnovers, turning them into 23 points.

The Red Flash got off to a strong start on Monday, building a six-point lead at 18-12 on the back of a lay-in and a three by Brock. SFU forced a pair of turnovers late and took the six-point lead into the second quarter. The lead would grow to nine on another Brock three to start the second before the Pioneers would storm back. A 9-0 run tied the game at 21 on the back of Hannah Kimmel, who had five points in the run, the junior led all scorers with 25 points. After SHU drew even, the teams would go back-and-forth until the Flash got two straight threes from Adams and Wynn. That sparked an 8-0 SFU run towards the end of the half, giving the Flash a 39-31 advantage. Another Wynn three helped to close the half as SFU took a 42-35 lead into the break.

Saint Francis would build on the late first half momentum, scoring seven of the first 10 points of the half to lead by as many as 11 at 49-38. The Pioneers would storm back, scoring the next 17 points over four minutes to take a 55-49 lead. A Wynn jumper ended the drought but a Pioneer three closed a 20-2 run to give SHU a seven-point edge. The Flash would answer with a Brock three and a Kovatch jumper to close the quarter trailing 58-56. SFU would respond out of the quarter break to close within one on an Adams' three and took the lead on a pair of Kovatch jumpers. The Red Flash would lead by as many as four in the fourth, taking a 70-66 lead into the media timeout.

Out of the timeout, the Pioneers ripped off five-straight points to lead 71-70, again paced by Kimmel and Kelsey Castro, who had 18 points on the night for Sacred Heart. The teams would trade baskets and the lead until a SFU turnover led to a three-point play and Kovatch's fifth foul. The freshman battled foul trouble all night and finished with eight points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. That sparked a 7-0 Pioneer run that ultimately was the difference. Sacred Heart would ice the game from the line, hitting five of six from the charity stripe in the final seconds. Wynn hit a deep three to close out the game, as the Flash fell to 1-1 in NEC play and 3-10 overall.

Brock's 21 led a strong effort off the bench, who chipped in 25 on the night. Cydney Smith (Port Tobacco, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) continued her strong play on the low block, finishing with a game-high three blocks. Smith came into the game leading the NEC with just under two blocks per game.

The Red Flash will look to rebound from the tough setback this weekend as they hit the road for the first time in NEC play. Saint Francis will head to Brooklyn for a pair of games, the Blackbirds of LIU-Brooklyn are up first on Saturday. Tip time is set for 2 p.m..
