Flash Points:Â
- Abigail Tarosky (North Huntington, Pa./Norwin) scored her first collegiate goal
- Julia Hernan (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) made six saves in the match
- Casey Gallaher (Sidman, Pa./Forest Hills) scored her second of the season for the Flash
TEANECK, NJ-Â Fairleigh Dickinson (3-9, 1-0) converted a penalty kick in double overtime to defeat the Red Flash (2-10, 0-1) 3-2 in the NEC opener for both teams.Â
An eventful first half saw
Julia Hernan (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) stone Elma Kolenovic on a penalty shot in the fifth minute of play after SFU was whistled for a foul in the goal box off a corner kick. The Flash countered, earning one of their five corner kicks just minutes later.
Siobhan Bross (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) just missed wide off the set piece, it was one of five shots the senior had on the day. The Knights scored first, taking advantage of a corner kick in the 12th minute. Saint Francis tried to clear the kick but it was redirected off the head of Connie Lewis and past Hernan to make it 1-0.Â
The Red Flash then struck twice within two minutes midway through the half. Bross was stopped twice by goalie Amanda Fitzgerald and
Leah Hardin (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) was stopped once as the Flash kept crashing the FDU goal.
Abigail Tarosky (North Huntington, Pa./Norwin) was the beneficiary of the pressure as she stole the ball from the FDU defense and beat Fitzgerald on the right side to tie the match at one. Less than two minutes later,
Casey Gallaher (Sidman, Pa./Forest Hills) also took advantage of an FDU turnover, knocking a shot past a diving Fitzgerald and into the net to make it 2-1 SFU.Â
In the 31st minute, the Knights would tie it up, again using a corner kick. Kolenovic headed home the set piece to tie the game at two. But the goal was costly as Kolenovic was issued a red card and Hernan a yellow card following the goal. Playing a man up, the Red Flash continued on the offensive looking for their third goal of the half.
Natalie Spangler (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) and Gallaher each had scoring chances turned aside by Fitzgerald and Bross just missed wide right. The teams went to the half knotted at two.Â
Saint Francis held the Knights in check for much of the second half, generating the majority of the scoring chances. The Flash fired off three chances in a sustained rush about 10 minutes into the half but missed wide twice and Fitzgerald made one save. SFU held the Knights without a shot in the half until the 84th minute when Hernan made a stop off a corner kick and out shot FDU 9-2 in the second half, but could not find the go ahead goal. The Flash had one last rush towards the end of regulation but
Sara Suler (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) missed just high and moments later the sophomore's shot was stopped by Fitzgerald, sending the match to overtime.Â
The Flash continued to pressure in the first overtime, generating all three shots in the ten minutes. Gallaher had a shot stopped while
Alyssa McGhee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) had her shot blocked out of bounds towards the end of the period. The Flash had two corner kicks in the first OT but couldn't find the golden goal. In the second OT, Suler just missed high off a corner kick as the FDU defense continued to bend but not break. In the 105th minute, the Flash were whistled for their second foul in the box of the day as the Knight converted on their second PK opportunity of the match.Â
The Red Flash out shot FDU 24-14 in the match including 11-9 in shots on goal while FDU held a slight 6-5 edge in corner kicks. Saint Francis will stay on the road to start a two-match weekend next Friday as they travel to Moon Township to take on Robert Morris. Match time is set for 3 p.m.
